Buzzing Michail’s ironic goal scoring night

Michail Antonio admitted the Hammers had allowed the game to die in the first half but that the injury to Marko Arnautovic had changed the game.

Speaking to Sky Sports he said: “It was a lively game, we had quite a few opportunities, then 20 minutes in it died out.

In the second half the injury to Marko (Arnautovic) changed the game, Lucas (Perez) came on and scored two and we were coasting.

“It is strange how I have been up front, left wing, right wing and then I play as right back and get the goal. I am buzzing to get my goal and hopefully I can keep adding to it.

“The penalty save was crucial, they are a solid team and they get nine behind the ball and work together. Liverpool didn’t score until late on against them and if they get the first goal they are hard to break down.

“There was a stage where we wasn’t scoring, now we have six goals in two games and we are trying to claw back the points we missed at the start of the season and see how far we can get up the league.”

ClaretandHugh says: It’s so easy to see how Pellegrini insisted that he was building a squad not a team and the Antonio goal is one of those ironies that only football can throw up. That he should score from that right back position is – as he says –  indeed strange. That he and Perez should get the vital goals, two fellas who have taken plenty of stick so far this season,  is also great. However, the downside is that Arnie looks likely to be missing games with what appeared to be a hamstring issue on f a night when most other things went right.  Clearly, Michail is now coming back to his best and the sort of player we simply can’t afford to lose such is his versatility in a range of positions. Competition such as we are seeing in various positions is terrific news for the Irons where too many have been able to take their places for granted in the past.
