Fat be it from me to revel in someone else’s misfortune. However with the lust for silverware growing ever stronger – and having tasted what victory looks like in June 2023, I along with thousands of Hammers fans am hungry for another cup run, another final, more silverware – and with the top four slots in the Premier League seemingly out of reach, the Carabao Cup represented one of our best chances for silverware and a pathway into Europe.
The crazy elite-biased seeding formula which UEFA have adopted would have seemed to tip the scales against West Ham, giving us an away fixture at Anfield for the third round. I shouldn’t complain too much though, I think we were the recipient of a second round bye ourselves through the same formula last year?
But it would seem, little by little, the scales are tipping back towards West Ham. Much has been written about Liverpool’s fixture build up so early in the season: The Carabao Cup clash will be their fourth fixture out of five in a hectic session which includes Premier League and a Champions League away fixtues, so Slot will need to rotate his side.
The scales have maybe tipped a little further in the Hammers’ favour with the unfortunate injury suffered by Harvey Elliott according to The Mirror.
It seems the 21 year old has fractured his foot and will be out for some six weeks plus, meaning he will miss the Carabao Cup tie with West Ham. Sorry for him but not such bad news for The Irons: Combined with the news that Niclas Fullkrug’s injury is just bruising and he should be back after Fulham’s Premier League clash at the weekend – West Ham’s prospects against The Reds creep back from ‘zero’ towards ‘just maybe’.
Am I clutching at straws? ‘Just Maybe’
No you’re not clutching at straws. Liverpool don’t win the League Cup every year so clubs do beat them.
Last year was an opportunity with Klopp having to field a weakened starting 11 but David Moyes rested a lot of our regular starting 11 due to fixture congestion. We were highly unlikely to win the Europa League but the League Cup would have been winnable with many favourites already knocked out. We just rolled over for them.
I was heading towards Moyes out at the time due to almost zero entertainment but after that absolutely I was.
Hi I think you are clutching at straws.
This item says everything about West Ham and I am a Hammer. You can’t go to Anfield and just because a couple of the Reds won’t be there, think you got a chance of a lucky win. This has been the attitude since November 1962 when I was born and I have only seen us win once. You can’t be scared of the opposition, if you are, you hace lost already, the better on the day will win, let’s hope for an entertaining match with both teams playing their part.
