Clubs such as Flamengo and sides in Serie A could comfortably match a Championship level wage of £38.5k per week. Yet if West Ham were promoted at the first attempt, walking away now would mean forfeiting a staggering £18 million in earnings, assuming the Hammers activated that extra year.
It should be noted that Taty’s reported weekly salary at his former club Lazio was just under £48k, meaning even playing in the Championship that’s a reduction of just £9,500. Italy’s tax regime is also slightly higher than the UKs for high earners, 45% versus 47.2% in Italy when accounting for regional and municipal taxes.
