Celtic fans, still reeling from the appointment of Wilfried Nancy who lasted just 33 days after losing six of his eight games in charge are shocked that he is even being mentioned as a managerial candidate – but the rumour mill linking former West Ham manager Graham Potter to Celtic has kicked into overdrive.

The reaction among their supporters has been a mix of disbelief, confusion, and outright panic.

Potter’s reputation was built on his early work at Östersund and a respectable spell at Brighton. But his more recent jobs, the ones that actually reflect his readiness for a club with Celtic’s expectations, have been disastrous.

Potter’s time at Chelsea was defined by inconsistency, tactical confusion, and a failure to impose any meaningful identity. His Premier League record at Chelsea was 12 wins, 8 draws and 11 losses, with an average of 1.42 points per game.

For a club with Chelsea’s resources, that return was nowhere near good enough. Despite a strong Champions League run, his domestic form was so poor that he was dismissed before the season ended.

Chelsea fans still talk about that period as one of the most directionless in recent memory.

If Chelsea was bad, West Ham was a full‑blown crisis.

As a painful reminder, Potter’s time at West Ham ended after a brutal run of results. His overall record from 25 matches yielded just 6 wins, 5 draws and 14 losses, culminating in an average of 0.92 points per game and a miserly 24% win rate. Officially West Ham’s worst ever manager.

Graham Potter holds his head in his hands

A managerial disaster looking for a club to happen at: Graham Potter

He was sacked after five defeats in six matches at the start of the 2025/26 season, with the board stating that results and performances “had not matched expectations.”

During a tenure of just 261 days, he clashed with the board, lost the support of us the fans, and his football was nothing short of disastrous. He ultimately appeared overwhelmed by the scale and pressure of the job.

Potter’a mantra is that he needs time, lots of it. Yet in modern day football managers don’t get “projects.” they get judged from day one.

Sadly there is little upside to the links to Celtic for West Ham, as the wages on offer will still likely mean the Hammers will need to pay the difference as compensation until June 2027.

Currently manger of Sweden he has drawn one and lost one game, yet if they win their World Cup play off Semi-Final against Ukraine they will go onto face Albania or Poland in March, meaning he could be offered a contract extension.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.

Don’t know if anyone noticed but Nuno had our worst record even worse than Potter until we brought in Taty, Pablo etc

    • Taffyhammer says:

But if Nuno had waited 6 games before officially taking up the reins, it would not seem so bad.

We need to compare potatoes with potatoes. Or maybe Tatys with Tatys?

Good luck Celtic you are going to need it with Potter as manager

Reckon they should go for Russell Martin, instead 😂

Glasgow Celtic. Richest club in the Scottish Premier League. Managerial success guaranteed.

Only a complete muppet could fail to make this giant click along sweetly.
