West Ham’s summer transfer, Brazilian prospect Luis Guilherme, has yet to live up to expectations, but there remains optimism that he can adapt and thrive in the Premier League over time.

Hammers Director of Football Tim Steidten secured the deal by paying Palmeiras, based in São Paulo, an initial €23 million (£19.5 million), with an additional €7 million (£5.86 million) in potential add-ons, along with a 20% sell-on clause.

Claret & Hugh spoke with a top West Ham source this morning who disclosed that buying the Brazilian had impacted the club’s spending later during the transfer window. Our top-placed Hammers insider said, “We have had to limit our funds as we bought Guilherme, but it is taking longer to come good than anticipated.”

Guilherme has yet to feature for West Ham in the Premier League this season, although he has played and scored for the under-21 side.

If, as suggested, the club had expected the player to hit the ground running, it shows quite how highly he was regarded. It would also explain why he was not loaned out when it became evident that head coach Julen Lopetegui was not giving the youngster game time.

I really hope Luis Guilherme comes good, but where is the logic to paying 25 million for this untried 18 year old, but dont go to 40 million for Duran at 20 years old with european experiance & premiership goal, but do buy a 31 year old Fullkrug again with no premiership experiance for 27 million, & this was the wonderful transfer window.
Sorry i think we got it wrong, very wrong. I also see sullìvan has lost money on his mansion, not as much as on WHU transfers , especially strikers

What exactly were the expectations of an 18 year old with no European experience and first time away from home, and whose expectations were they? Once again, the ITK’s appear to be catching up with the armchair brigade.

Players the club were offered over last few years and we turned them down..moyes mostly…

I find this utterly ridiculous..ive known loads of top players over the years that are awful in training but totally different animal on the pitch …how on earth can you make a decision without giving him half a game at the very least…the window isn’t looking so great now …fulkirg was a bad buy ….could of got Duran for extra 5 mil ..now look.at him and look at our over 90 year old forward line…all that money spent and still crap slow pondering forwards we have …the one.player with pace who is good enough for a top brazilian team isn’t for us apparently…beggars belief…hope I’m wrong but the negative stuff about j lo before.he became manager is surfacing….just look.at the gulf between us.and villa ….
