Like many of you no doubt I watched a horrendous Spurs team beaten by a Chelsea penalty last night – a team for all their pretty football should have won by five
Pundit Rio Ferdinand delivered probably his most scathing opinion on any team when describing Spurs as hopeless with no plan or ideas following the first 45 minutes. Glenn Hoddle wasn’t far behind him.
The result put the south west Londoners into sixth place two points behind us with Mourinho’s mob back in eighth – five points behind us.
It means we are top club in London with Spurs looking like the West Ham of a couple of years back and Chelsea not good enough to capitalise.
Then one thought entered my head – why on earth would Declan Rice want to join the club that got rid of him as a kid. They were okay but against that lot it should have been a rout.
Ok, it was only 90 minutes but the reality is we are good and better than them right now and likely to improve more and more over time.
Here is our skipper playing alongside the man I consider the other best midfielder in the Premier League, Tomas Soucek, in a team which is among the most exciting in the top level.
With Lampard gone, and Chelsea having a host of players with whom Declan would need to compete for a place, there’s no reason for him to go there or anywhere.
Should we – as begins to look possible -make Europe he will want to stay according to his former boss and CandH blogger Terry Westley. He is captain of one of the best teams in the League and can go on to become an absolute legend at this club. Right now he looks a Hammers fixture and things generally look very good indeed.
I think much of the draw of Chelsea for Declan is because of the Mason Mount connection. Whatever Chelsea felt was missing from Declan has been unearthed and polished by Terry Westley and our academy. It’s a pleasure to watch him evolving and improving his game week after week, if he went to a “big club” I believe it would slow his progress, you can’t beat playing week in week out in the Premier league to improve your game.
Hey Peter, I agree with you, maybe Rice can talk Mount into joining us at West Ham he is definitely a Moyes kind of player.
