Clarke: Zarate has little chance in this set-up

FSormer West Brom boss Steve Clarke – appearing as a pundit on the Irons/Malaga match this afternoon – appeared to nail the team’s attacking problems this afternoon

Discussing Mauro Zarate’s performance during the first 45 minutes against Malaga which sees us 2-0 behind, he made it clear the Argentine had no chance of creating an impressi0n.

He said: “The policy seems to be to have one up and two wingers but they never come inside and link with him.

“Zarate is surrounded by big defenders and for him to make an impact there have to be players linking with him.”

  1. What Steve didn’t say was that we had no clue going forward at all I can’t see where goals are ever going to come from .

    • We had two games in two days. If you play a 2 striker system you need 4 strikers over the two days. Valencia not ready car rolls crocked new signing not bought yet. Who are you going to play up top? Cole up front with zarate playing off him the first day. Then who you going to play as the front two the second day ? Most say zarate is not a front man that he is better playing off the front man. Today we found out that is correct. Better to find that out preseason and give him a fitness workout at same time. Carlton cole once did reasonably well as the lone striker upfront probably the only time he ever did ok and that was under Clarke and Zola. Cole no longer offers a great deal. He is like a punch drunk heavyweight boxer who is too tired to fight anymore so spends the entire fight clinging on desperately to his opponent in the hope he won’t get found out … Or knocked out

  2. Clark has no special insight, he is just stating what we can all see. Everyone except Sam and our owners. I appreciate what they have done for the club but they have cocked up big time by keeping Sam on. Results are not that importent in pre season games but the lack of ideas, coherent tactics, variations and…..whatever, it really is pathetic, it is depressing. It’s going to be a long season.

  3. Steve Clarke and rob Lee were spot on ! I hope the owners were listeening. Such a disjointed performance, with no attacking threat, signing Zarate was a waste of time because he will never be played in the hole, off the front man which I think is his best position! Playing him up on his own is ridiculous. still preseason but the alarm bells have started to ring!!

  4. Totally agree with all thats been said.. Just watch those matches ! wonder if i can get a refund on the spurs game lol ( not really ) But am completely shocked at our lack of any ideas bfs is not gonna change looks like hes setting up for 38 points an survival GOD what a long season ahead after lots of promises for the season..

  5. It was truly terrible – West Ham looked absolutely clueless!

What was the point of having all those kids in the team – it makes no sense to me!

A long season coming up for sure – BFS out!

  6. Just two words DS and DG, “Allardyce out”!!!

  7. Injuries to key players, new signings and Andy Carroll haven’t helped but playing two wingers and one up top leaves us short on firepower not to mention wide open and exposed in midfield!
If we must persist with this winged madness then they have to learn and learn quickly that they have to be able to cut inside and support the striker. Oh and score a few goals would also be nice!
