West Ham United have made the official announcement that Jarrod Bowen is the Club Captain, to pretty much universal acclaim from supporters, commentators bloggers – and me!

As the club website states: “

The England international forward will wear the armband after being named by Head Coach Julen Lopetegui, with long-serving defender Aaron Cresswell as his vice-captain.

Bowen’s leadership qualities have been evident since he joined the Club in January 2020, as the 27-year-old has established himself as one of the first names on the West Ham teamsheet through a combination of his all-round talents, relentless work-rate and commitment and never-say-die attitude.”

Leading by example personified. A great choice as leader both from his style and the respect which we as West Ham Fans have for him and his exemplary attitude to all things Claret and Blue. Another reason to smile today.

As Jarrod comments:

“I am incredibly proud and happy to be West Ham United captain. We’ve had many great moments here as a Club. I’ve been here four-and-a-half years now, so to be named Club captain is a really proud moment and one that I’ll wear with great honour.

“It’s four and a half years since I joined, but it’s felt so much longer and that’s the enjoyment of playing for this Club and the relationships I’ve had with all the sets of players we’ve had, the managers we’ve had and the fans. It’s been one heck of a journey and from when I first signed to be sat here four-and-a-half years later and be named Club captain makes me so proud.

“Since I’ve been here it’s just been an upward trajectory in what we’ve done on the pitch, what I’ve done off the pitch. To get to this moment is another statement of love I have for this Club, along with when I signed my new deal last year. I said then that I want to stay here for the rest of my life and I haven’t come off that page. If I can go down as a legend here in years to come, that would be great.”

Makes us proud to be Hammers. Another winning goal in a final, please, Captain fantastic, and you’ll be a legend sure enough.

Like everyone else, lifelong WHU fan and season ticket holder in old BMU stand at Upton Park from 2003. Billy Bonds these days with my adult son and impatiently waiting for my Grandson to be old enough to initiate him before his mum grabs him for Man U. All opinions are my own very biased ones.

    Sorry is this a joke??

  • Jay says:

Very pleased for Bowen. He’s displayed his commitment to our club both on and off the pitch. No doubt he’ll lead by example and be a great influence on his team mates.

The right man for the job. Dedicated to the club, doesn’t miss many games, and will have his father in law to answer too if he messes up !

Many congratulations, Jarrod. Totally deserved, I can’t think of anyone better to be Captain.
Your first task ? To beat Villa on Saturday.

  • Bournehammer says:

    Great news, fully deserved.
I would imagine Kilman is 2ic.

  • Neil Down Under says:

Well done fella, just keep doing what you do.
You’ll set the tone of what you expect by how you perform on the pitch, which has been nothing less than exceptional.
Bring us those European nights back and keep us smiling, evidence of what’s to come was on full view in the last friendly.
The excitement for the new season is massive… just like us!
    Massive wherever we go!
    COYI!!!

Much as I like Bowen I am not totally convinced by this pick, but then in my life when we have had Moore and Bonds both are hard acts to follow. I think a native english speaker is important if for no other reason than communicating with the referees in the PL. Wolves fans had often questioned Kilman’s leadership qualities, something along the lines of he did not handle the responsibility well. Bowen seems a little ‘nice’ – nothing like having a thug like Roy Keane making a referee understand the error of their ways – but certainly an upgrade on Zouma who always seemed totally anonymous in the role. One other takeaway would seem to be that Cress is going to be a key member of the squad at least this season. But will he be on the pitch to take the armband if and when Bowen is subbed? And if not who?

  • Hammeroo says:

Congratulations Jarrod! You are a worthy captain because you put your heart and soul into West Ham United. You have a fantastic work ethic and and are a very decent bloke. You always had my vote for the capataincy so I am well pleased that you got the gig!

  • Benny the Aussie says:

This is a great pick. His style of play along with his work rate make him the perfect candidate.
I’m looking forward to this season with renewed hope and optimism.

  • Steve says:

Personally a midfielder or defender should be captain who can see everything going on , a striker as a hard job up front without dealing with players and referees.
I hope the captaincy don’t take over what he is good at, we have players that have been captain in previous clubs.
    Good luck JB ⚒️ C.O.Y.I ⚒️

  • Sheik Yerbouti says:

A captains job should be to motivate and gee players up something Billy Bonds did brilliantly.
As much as I like Jarrod I question whether he can do that.I hope I am proved wrong.
