Back in April of last year, West Ham’s then manager Graham Potter considered strengthening his defender options by bringing in a player with whom he was familiar from his Brighton days.
Adam Webster, who was one of Potter’s ‘marquee’ signings in 2019, was linked with a move to West Ham and a reunion with his former Manager as he approached the end of his Brighton contract.
Reported by Claret and Hugh as Potter’s ‘Craig Dawson‘ moment, in the end the plan to bring in the then-30 year old centre-back came to nothing.
West Ham appear to be considering another attempt to recruit the out of contract Webster, this time on a ‘free’ signing.

According to exWHUemployee, Webster is seen as a pretty safe option:
“It makes sense to sign at least one centre back on a free. There are a few that tick the box and I know are on the radar….The first is Adam Webster. He was at Brighton. He is 31, so not too old, and stands at 6’3.
He has a lot of experience having played for the likes of Portsmouth, Ipswich, Bristol City, and Brighton in the Championship …He does have leadership qualities, and we certainly looked at signing him under Potter”
One who could become every bit as good a signing for the Hammers, Webster has a lot of parallels with Dawson – age, position, rocky injury history.
With limited funds and the likelihood of at least two of West Ham’s first team centre backs departing in the coming weeks, Webster could finally get a move to east London well over a year after the idea was first floated.
Brighton releasing Webster isn’t because he isn’t good enough it’s because he’s hardly ever fit to play. Best not on this one.
