David Moyes Gets a Dose of The Merse Treatment

David Moyes just the latest to get ‘sage advice’ from Merson

There are many untrue football clichĂŠs, but one of the most overused is the well-worn claim that “nobody ever signs a good player in the January transfer window.” West Ham has disproven this repeatedly, notably with the signings of Jarrod Bowen, TomĂĄĹĄ Souček, and Jesse Lingard.

Another tired phrase resurfaced yesterday, courtesy of perpetually grumpy pundit Paul Merson: “You never go back.” This idea suggests managers revisiting former clubs are doomed to fail. However, Merson doesn’t need to look far for an example that shatters this myth—David Moyes-the very bloke Merse was speaking about.

During Moyes’ first stint at West Ham, he successfully fulfilled his brief of saving the club from relegation but was replaced at the end of the season as the Hammers sought a more progressive appointment.

When Manuel Pellegrini’s tenure faltered, Moyes returned and enjoyed the most successful period in the club’s modern history. His second stint has seen three consecutive European campaigns, a Europa League quarter-final, a semi-final, and the club’s first trophy in over 40 years. Moyes’ return is a glowing example of why “never go back” isn’t always true.

Perhaps Merson will get this one right, after all a broken clock is correct twice a day and the conditions are Everton are quite different so those at West Ham. However it was an odd observation by Merson who just can’t seem to help himself these days.

Merson? Who cares what he says?

  • D2 says:

I have seen the video where he says Everton are doomed to relegation under Moyes. Whilst I agree with him, I’m sure he was one of the ‘careful what you wish for’ brigade. So why was Moyes so important to our success, yet now he has gone to Everton he has turned into a manager who will get you relegated. Is it because he knew what he told West Ham fans originally was a load of b@@@@@ks

Life moves on, Moyes helped us to our first silverware since the ark was launched, thank you, good luck but that door is now shut.
Potter wasn’t my first choice, but he’s there & I’m ready to give him my full backing.
Give him time to try & sort out the dogs dinner that Lopetegui has left behind. It won’t happen overnight & atm top 10 would be a bonus

Spot on Muffy , Merson is an idiot and I for one dont care .

What Merson should have said about Moyes, Is don’t repeat the mistake he made going to Sunderland a team that is beyond saving. As is Everton I think. Everton are doomed and Moyes can’t save them unless they spend big in the transfer window and I don’t think they any money to spend.

Yep, to all of the comments, time to move on.
Let’s focus on the now, forget the past and welcome the future.
What’s done is done, and it suits no purpose other than for someone desperate to sell a headline.
Merson is 100% entitled to have and voice an opinion, they all are.
But go to any forum, and HYS, Facebook, even here, there are folk who can’t let it go. But what what purpose? Perhaps being able to say “I told you so”, gives them some form of validation, it still doesn’t change what happened. Move onwards and upwards.

Final note – wish Merson would stop saying “phenomenal “ really getting on my tits.
Someone must have told him it’s a great word to use – but the bloke can’t even spell his own name !
Anyway, back to things that matter. As people have mentioned, difficult time for Graham to come in but looking forward to the Summer when he can really put his stamp on the side.
Hopefully, though, we’ll still see 3/4 through the door this window as emergency surgery needed now, with couple of wasters moved on.
As EssexIron67 says, mid table this season perfectly acceptable.

Can we as great fans now just focus on going forward with a new manager , I don’t care about merson ,moyes ,Sutton or the 2 disgraced ex sky employee,s who now operate out of a broom cupboard somewhere in the world. I didn’t see the villa game but even though we lost I’m more happy than I have been all season, let’s give Potter a chance as mid season managerial changes have got to be tougher than at the start of the season . Can he put together a team to beat Fulham ,it’s going to be tough with our injuries but hopefully we can do something in the transfer market and look to move forward hopefully in February. Just to finish mid table would be fine by me . Keep bringing the academy players into the team where possible,Scarles didn’t let us down and I’m sure some of the others would give everything if given a chance when appropriate.

Well spoken. Why are we bothered what Everton are doing and Mersons stupid views from a bloke who could not control his drinking.

  • Peter says:

Message to Mers, focus on staying out the pub and the bookies and outtimg your family through hell, rather than keep having digs at others!
    Blimey stones and green houses…

  • Tom says:

Please can we stop reporting on this dinasour he is not at West Ham United now!!

    • Morty says:

It’s a bit depressing if we can only think of current players and manager, part of the joy of being a football fan is reminiscing about the history of your club and its ups and downs and seeing how previous employees are doing now.

      • X says:

Exactly and the so called dinosaur achieved amazing things at our club and will always be a part of our history.

        • Morty says:

Yeah I wish we had a few more dinosaurs over the years of suffering 😊⚒️⚒️
