David Moyes Southampton full post match presser

David Moyes gave his virtual post-match presser after the Southampton game last night and this is what he had to say:

Your assessment of the game?

Pleased because we kept a really good clean sheet. I think there were some new lads that came into the team, we gave them a chance and I thought they did really well and took their opportunity.

Southampton are in form and a good team, their league position tells you that. Look, it wasn’t a bad point, we are pleased with it and in the same breath we probably just about had the best chance of the game where we could have won it late on.

Did you expect Benrahma to bury that chance?

Yeah, I did, the minute I saw it break to him I was expecting the goal.

I haven’t had a chance to look at it back yet but I am told the keeper made an excellent save.

Craig Dawson made his debut, thoughts on his performance?

Very good but I don’t think anyone should be surprised with that, he is a very good central defender and has been good wherever he has been.

I have to say he did great for us, he helped us keep a clean sheet and it is good for him.

Michail Antonio come through his 15 minutes unscathed?

Yes, he has and that’s a big boost. We have missed him, we have been muddling through a little bit without him, trying to find ways of getting goals from other sources if we can.

The players have done a good job but obviously getting him back playing, we have to tread carefully with him, be patient with him.

Needed to make changes?

We play again in three days time. I am not moaning because it is the world and the Premier League we play in and have celebrated for so many years. I would like it to be that both teams had a similar situation.

For Southampton to have an extra day on us. In the last 20 minutes, we showed as much energy as Southampton. I thought they started the game incredibly well. We grew into the game as it went on.

Did anyone make a case to force their way into the starting eleven regularly?

I’ve not been overly happy with how we played in the last couple of games. Some of the results have been very good, win at Leeds, draw with Palace and against Brighton.

There are other players doing well in training and I want to give them a chance to show what they can do. The early part of the season there was a consistent side but losing Mickey and Arthur meant we were looking for things to work that, we’re still trying to solve that but I thought today Fredericks played very well, Craig Dawson did a great job.

Yarmolenko and Lanzini came on in the week and did a good job, and they had another good day today. We’ve got competition and we have to keep that.
