Defender admits it wasn’t good but will get better

Ryan Fredericks produced one of the team’s better performances against Newcastle and looks certain to hold down his place in the upcoming Arsenal game.

Individually, he combined regularly combining regularly with both Jarrod Bowen and substitute Andriy Yarmolenko down the right flank, delivering six crosses and a team-high five key passes.

The right-back has often been inconsistent and we have to hope that he will now found a level of performance to keep himself injury-free and ready to take his opportunities.

As is always the case after a defeat he was less happy than he might have been but is looking forward to better times in the next game.

Ben Johnson looks likely to return for the game against Charlton tomorrow night (Tues) giving Fredericks time to recover from Saturday’s exertions.

In the meantime, he has been giving his view of the first defeat of the season and agrees with Declan Rice that it really wasn’t good enough.

We need to be a lot sharper all over the pitch,” he told Sky Sports. “We didn’t defend well at times. They didn’t cause us too much trouble, but their goals were pretty soft, so we need to change that.

“We need to create more than we did upfront, but we’ve got good players up there and we’ve got good players at the back, so we just need to go again next week, get together during training this week, and I’m sure it’ll be better next week.

“I think we’re a team who it doesn’t matter who we’re playing against; it’s more about us on the day. We did well against some of the top six and top eight teams last season and I’m sure we’ll do it again.”

“I’d agree with Dec that we couldn’t have played much worse,” he confirmed. “We ended last season well, we were flying, and we’ve come back and we’ve been training well and training hard and trying to do the same things, but Saturday definitely wasn’t good enough.

“We had the exact same team that went and dominated games most games at the back end of last season, even when we were playing some of the top teams in the league, but we just weren’t at it.

“It’s game one of a long season, so we’re not going to get too down.”

  1. Hmmm. Your rating of performance posting contradicts this article. Also, unless I missed it, the fan rating wasn’t released.
Fredericks did struggle at times but played two-way, worked hard and his speed saved us considerable embarrassment. The rest of the squad looked like they had just returned from two weeks of binge-drinking.

  2. I wish the WHU official website would stop adding pieces from players after we’ve lost games, as they always say the same rubbish when we lose – WE WILL TRY HARDER, WE LOST FOCUS, WE’LL FOCUS MORE, LESSONS WILL BE LEARNT.

It’s as if there’s a set text for players to use and I, as a long standing hammers fan, am sick of hearing their comments after an appalling display. It’s fine if they’ve fought hard and lost. If effort was put in and they sweat blood and tears for the badge. But not when they looked like they’d just done an allnighter from Bangkok and their minds were on any dodgy photos that had been taken! There are some useful pieces on the offical site and it’s great to hear useful news and stories but I’m sure I’m not the only one who is bored of the tiresome crap when we’ve under performed.

  3. The good old faithful..we will do better…it was just a blip ..bad day at office, will be the nxt one…

    • Yup for sure! I don’t want to hear from any of these muppets whenever we play badly…they need to keep their traps shut and work harder – that’s the only thing they need to be doing… 🙂
