Departing defender Guy Demel has set the cat among the pigeons inside the Boleyn by suggesting that Slaven Bilic was not the preferred candidate among several Irons players for the manager’s job.
The veteran defender – who leaves on July 1 – claims that he and other players in the dressing room were keen on Marseilles boss Marclo Bielsa although it’s not quite clear how it would have affected the full back given he’s leaving!
He said “Of course I am aware of news about Olympique Marseille, so when the rumour came out we talked about it in the locker room with Morgan [Amalfitano] and other French-speaking players.
“Given the results and the performances of OM last season, we thought he would be a good choice.
“It’s a big job that has been offered but, unfortunately for West Ham, it did not happen.”
He then went on to mention how he would love to work under Bielsa at Marseille, the club he supported as a boy: “Why not? OM for a ‘Marseillais’ is always special.”
