Diouf Arrival Hints at West Ham’s Peter Pan Transfer Strategy Under Potter

At this point, it’s difficult to say whether new West Ham signing El Hadji Malick Diouf will turn out to be good, bad, or indifferent.

Clearly, we’re all hoping for the best from the 20-year-old, but until we see him wearing the new Hammers shirt, all we’ve really got to go on is some dodgy YouTube footage and his performance for Senegal against England.

However, it’s what Diouf’s signing symbolises that I find most encouraging. The easiest thing for West Ham to have done would’ve been to sign Kyle Walker-Peters on a free transfer from Southampton. He’s Premier League-proven, has represented England twice, is cheap, and at 28 years of age, he’s ready to go.

As Claret & Hugh reported earlier this week, Hammers boss Graham Potter rejected the chance to bring in the Saints free agent. Instead, he’s stuck to his word and opted for youth and potential.

It can’t be easy at West Ham to stick to your guns—particularly after last season’s transfer of Luiz Guilherme, which likely made some at the club hesitant about targeting younger players.

But West Ham had the second-oldest squad in the Premier League last season—and the same the year before. Potter knew when he arrived that the team needed fresh legs. And the first signing of the summer will now be one of the youngest players in the squad.

Clearly, more needs to be done. But if this is a sign of things to come, it could finally herald a much-needed shift from what’s been a pretty poor recruitment strategy.

Hammers Chat my first game was West Ham 10-0 Bury . . . seriously!
We than went and bought Bury's central defender 😬⚒️ Irons

I started Hammers Chat alongside my partner in crime Geo back in 2014 and brough in to Claret & Hugh by my old mate Hughie to produce videos a couple of years later.

I give West Ham opinions and interviews on Sky Sports News and even did a bit of moonlighting on BBC Football Focus. Former video and content creator for West Ham United back in the days of Upton Park. I was lucky enough to feature in the documentary broadcast on that final wonderful game at the Boleyn when Winston Reid broke Manchester United hearts.

I frequently feature on BBC Radio 5 Live and once ate a biscuit in Tony Gales shed.

Connoisseur of salted caramel doughnuts and I love a Sloppy Giuseppe pizza although I'm slightly suspicious where the name came from.

When I'm not moaning about West Ham I can be found walking a dog that looks like a sheep and tinkering with pinball machines.

Well said Gonzo. The surprise is a welcome one and long may it last.

    • Gonzo says:

Fingers crossed Rob, if we can bring in 3 or 4 players under the age of 25 with a bit of experience I’m sure we’ll see the difference in energy levels.

Team will not survive if it’s going to be largely inexperienced academy players.
Week in and week out they will be playing players who are physically used to playing 90 minutes league matches.
Completely different to playing U21 teams.
Afcon/injuries could be a problem reducing squad size.
Ideally 2 players for each position giving each other cover and that includes strikers.

    Hope you’re right Gonzo.

If Potter has complete sign off on who comes in and Sullivan does not interfere then we’ve got a chance of survival.

If Sullivan goes and signs Josh Brownhill and Dominic Calvert-Lewin I think we are in a relegation battle.
