It’s often interesting to hear how players can play a key role in securing a transfer. That was certainly the case with Vladimir Coufal, who was signed based on the recommendation of his compatriot and Hammers midfielder, Tomas Soucek.

More recently, we’ve heard the story of Carlos Soler, who consulted with his former Spain U21 teammate and former Hammer Pablo Fornals before deciding to move to London Stadium.

It’s no surprise to hear a similar story involving French defender Jean-Clair Todibo. According to an interview in The Athletic, West Ham’s £37m centre-back was constantly fielding inquiries from a very eager Hammers squad member, clearly keen to ensure the deal went through.

It was revealed that Alphonse Areola called Todibo daily for updates on the transfer and advised him to reject a move to Juventus and instead head to East London.

While there were likely more factors at play, such as Juventus being unable to meet Nice’s transfer demands, it’s a nice story, and credit to Areola for helping convince Todibo to join. Now, let’s see if he can break into the team.
