Does Mexican league hold loan striker clue?

olympique-marseilles-gignac-celebrates-after-scoring-the-second-goal-for-the-team-during-their-french-ligue-1-soccer-match-against-paris-st-germain-at-the-velodrome-stadium-in-marseilleWest Ham chairman David Sullivan said we could be signing a loan striker from a strange league in the next seven days. That strange league could be the Ligue MX in Mexico. The striker in question could be Frenchman Andre-Pierre Gignac who plays Mexican team Tigres UANL.

The 30 year old striker was a former team mate of Dimtri Payet at Marseille and the French national team and they are understood to remain good friends.

Gignac was linked to West Ham in the last January transfer window previously scoring 20 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions in French Ligue One and attracted the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs before his move to Mexico.

Earlier today on Sky Sullivan told viewers: “There is a possibility that a striker could come in on loan in the next seven days with an option to buy him. He is an overseas striker. If I told you (the league) you wouldn’t believe (it).”

“It’s like when we signed Lanzini from, I didn’t know what league he was in, but I call it Saudi Arabia. People said we are signing players from a very strange league but he has played in higher leagues. This one  may not happen it is just a possibility. If all of our strikers are fit we have probably got too many strikers anyway”

That is our best guess so far on who the mystery striker might be.

12am UPDATE: My educated guess appears to be wrong! Click Here to reveal the real identity of the ‘overseas’ on loan striker who could join us within the next seven days.

  1. you may be right here sean, either Ba or Gignac imo,
can’t say i know anything about their current form though, hit the ground running and all that!
    we shall see or not..
    take care fella
    john.

  2. Definitely has pedigree if true although short term rather than long term prospect, would be happy to see him in Claret & Blue !!

  3. I registered to say well done. I just saw the interview and assumed there must be some pretty narrow speculation based on that. This article has nailed it and I’d be very pleased if it happened.

  4. Some are saying it could be Demba Ba who is playing in China but it doesn’t fit as well in my opinion.

    • Bilic knows Ba from Besiktas, the one advantage Ba has is that he is great operating in a pair chipping in with goals and also able to lead the line and bring his partner (Sakho in our case) into the game. He would be a natural replacement for the Carroll / Jelavic position. Gignac is more an out and out goalscorer whatever way would be happy to see either of them in claret and blue, lets hope your educated guess is a good one !!!

  5. He would be a great fit with his pass relationship with Payet and he is a proven scorer who is a genuine number 9,
If he arrived AC and Sakho could be sitting watching him,but I thought we were at our limit for loan players,
Does that mean Lanzini would become our player at last or Song ?
The money could come from selling Jelly and Zarate,
Let Jenkinson go home to where his heart is,
Our squad is getting stronger every week

  6. Well, one thing. If he proves to be anywhere near the quality of Payet and Lanzini, it will answer the question once and for all, as to where Carroll fits and it won’t be as a starting striker

  7. Would make sense to have a French mate for payet. Also we must keep an eye on the Mexican league because it’s where we got enner Valencia from. Pachucha.

  8. One other possibility is Emmanuel Emenike, He is a Nigerian international footballer who plays as a striker for Al Ain on loan from Fenerbahçe

  9. I also registered just to say well done. It’s certainly the most educated guess so far. I was looking through the Chinese league but other than Ba couldn’t see any other notable players who had played in ‘higher’ leagues. With his mate Payet feeding him he could be lethal, and could be a 20+ goal a season striker, as he has been elsewhere. He’s scored 16 in 22 for Tigres, and netted 59 times for Marseille in 154 appearances. Worth taking him on loan to find out if he can do it in England.
As others have said our squad continues to get stronger, and for me the signing of Byram could prove a watershed moment in our development. For us, West Ham, to do what the so called ‘bigger’ clubs have been doing to us since before I can remember, and to directly beat another top team to a sought after player’s signature, shows that we have turned a corner. The lure of the Olympic stadium, playing attacking football in an exciting team surrounded by quality internationals and a young charismatic manager, and living in London, all contribute to make us an attractive proposition for any player. As better players come in, even better players will be attracted, and so on…
We’re certainly moving in the right direction, so Happy Days!
