As news of Flynn Downes’ imminent departure from West Ham filtered through the media this afternoon, there was an obvious omission from the reports.
West Ham fans were informed that a transfer between the Hammers and Southampton had been agreed upon for the midfielder, and that he had travelled to the south coast for his medical.
While the precise finances of the transfer were unrevealed, it was assumed that the deal would be for a fee in the region of £15-18M.
However, there was no mention of Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters, who has been heavily linked with West Ham for the past three weeks. The former Tottenham fullback is rumoured to be keen on a move to East London, and it’s clearly evident that the Hammers need a new right-back.
Therefore, it would seem obvious that with Downes heading in the opposite direction, KWP would now be free to complete his move to West Ham. Unfortunately, the silence appears to be deafening on the transfer, and we certainly know that the Saints value him to be worth more than Downes.
Perhaps a swap deal was just too complicated in the current climate, and maybe we’re negotiating behind the scenes for the player. However, Southampton Manager Russell Martin was very vocal about the Flynn Downes deal, so it’s odd to have radio silence on the Walker-Peters transfer.
Hopefully, West Ham and Southampton can come to an agreement because, as was clear from the Hammers’ pre-season friendly, the club is very light at right-back.
We would be fools to now go out and gift Southampton the £25m they apparently value Walker Peters at. IF we actually do want him, and there are much better alternatives for less money, offer them the £15m to £18m back that they have just agreed to pay for Downes. Any more and we should walk away.
Got to laugh at the Southampton fans brass neck KWP a sideways step lol whilst they are facing another dogfight he will regret signing a new contract……rmbr what looks good in the championship is just that this coming season the same old worries will resurface and down you will go again…like Portsmouth Southampton are an insignificant club on the south coast…Brighton the only team down that way who have something about themselves
What’s comedy is some yoyo club that blagged some farmers cup in Europe, plays In probably the worst stadium in the league, released it’s best manager in memory and was stupid enough to buy Ings and JWP at such fee’s thinking they’ll be anywhere other than the lower half of the table, Brighton won’t survive forever trying to replicate Southampton 10 years ago and already look to have been found out towards the end of last season
W⚓️ alert!
Ha ha, Great Stuff 👏 ⚒️
I always regard Saints & West Ham as very similar clubs, given that West Ham have been more successful than Saints yet the sense of entitlement from Irons fans in this KWP deal/no deal is amazing given that West Ham are hardly the most successful London team. We’ll see how this pans out.
Yeah, they have sold all there best players and on last seasons showing I give em 2 years and the will be down to ,its unstastanable and u are a bell end get ur facts right Southampton have more top flight years
than both those clubs put together .
KWP is on the verge of signing a new contract and has clearly told West ham he isn’t interested in a sideways move and Ings burnt his bridges leaving last time and knows it which is why he is happy to stay put and pick up his generous wage
Seems strange, with their obvious desire for Downes and maybe Ings, our interest in KWP, they get Downes, we get nada, keep the faith, 🤞the new jefe gets his choices and is able to give West Ham a real opportunity to play with a successful winning style.
