Downing fee revealed

downing1The Irons received a fee of £5.25 million for Stewart Downing when selling him to Middlesbrough earlier in the week.

And they will get another £1.5 million from the Championship outfit if the club is promoted to the Premier League at any time during his five year contract.

It’ a decent deal for a 30-year-old winger despite Irons wanting £7 million and Slaven Bilic being reportedly keen to keep him at Upton Park.

It was reported that the winger told the manager that had any other club come for him he would have stayed but couldn’t resist the lure of his home town outfit.

Newcastle United, Leicester City and Sunderland were all keen but once Middlesbrough cam in it was a no brainer where he would end up.

  1. So now I am a Middlesbrough supporter in the championship,
Could be very good money we seem to be getting the idea right in these transfers,

  2. Lol,yep, come on Boro, get promoted in the next five yrs.£5m for a soon to be 31yr old was fine, but just under £7m makes it excellent money 😉

  3. Not so sure Downing’s departure is such a good thing . We was pretty creative as far as I could see .. We are struggling to score goals before the season even kicks off ,, hope we can kick that habit ASAP . What I don’t understand is putting in a bid of 6million for a 33 year old who was playing in the championship . Might as well go for Spurs lone player ” Lennon” and keep Nolan if that’s the thinking . Austin would obviously be a good signing and hope we get him . … The other night against Birkerkaga ( or whatever ) was always going to difficult . They came with the intention of keeping a clean sheet in what for them was a massive game . West Ham are still trying to find their feet after so many changes .
Just hope it doesn’t take too long . The first four games of the season will more or less tell us what to expect .

  4. We are 6 weeks away from the start of the season and mass panic erupts because of our alleged lack of goals, pearls of wisdom by MR CAPS lock on wasting money on Obinna and Ogbonna after 1 game and those clamouring for captain no legs to be part of the future. We all agree we need another forward another winger maybe and the money from Downing may go towards that, in 6 weeks we will find out what the team is about but the future looks pretty rosy to me ….

  5. I agree with you , GW , that the future looks pretty rosy . As I said , we are still trying to find our feet . We will only know what the new signings are all about when the season gets underway in earnest . It’s all a bit trial & error at the moment , but I feel fairly confident it will all come together . It does look though , that the Kitty is running low . Reckon the Austin thing is getting a bit financially beyond us without losing more players . Maybe we could do with another Winger & Attacker , but the squad doesn’t look too bad right now . A lot of youngsters coming through the ranks that paint a rosier future , maybe . But you must admit conceding 2 against Southend doesn’t bode well for the defence , so maybe another defender is also a thing that needs addressing .
