West Ham’s opponents today – Aston Villa – have not looked back since sacking Stevie Gerrard exactly a year ago.
The Evening Standard has recalled the “anniversary” as the Irons head for Villa Park against a team that has progressed enormously since coming under the influence of new boss Unai Emery.
They point out that when the former Liverpool star was sacked only a couple of points separated themselves and the Hammers near the bottom of the table.
It’s the same margin as now sees them separated at the top – a remarkable turnaround for both clubs.
