“Duran Must Wait” | Striker’s Defiant War Cry

Hammers’ veteran goal scorer is in defiant mood having rejoined the club during their pre-season phase in Florida. Perhaps it was the brief respite of  just three weeks away from training, but Michael Antonio feels raring to go for the remainder of the friendly games and the more important business which follows:

Speaking with the official club web site whufc.com , he said:“I’ve only had three weeks off, so my body hasn’t actually started to lose much. It’s only when you get to the fourth week that it starts happening. I took two weeks off after the Copa América, then in the third week I did a couple of runs to ensure I kept my fitness up, so I feel like I’m fit and I’m getting there and we’ll see in the next couple of games.”

And Mikey was especially combative when it came to the subject of the Club possibly signing a new striker to compete for the number nine shirt: –

“So, whoever comes in, I’ll be up for the competition. I’m the number nine for a reason. You can come in and try to take my place but, even at my age now, I’m still going to fight for my place and keep going because I feel like I still have the ability and I don’t think my legs have gone or my ability has gone.”

Which is good news for those of us hoping to see each member of the squad pushing hard to keep their spot in the team. Laying down the challenge to whoever the club bring in, Antonio served notice that he won’t be going quietly and that even at 34 he feels he is still the top dog.

Which can only be good  news for the coming challenges of the 24/5 season ,providing he has a new competitor  before the transfer window closes!

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970.. Don't take my comments too seriously, imagine we are having a chat at half time over a pint at L S and "let's disagree without falling out".

At least Antonio’s there unlike all these other transfer targets getting bit bored of all this transfer talk and nothing happening.

I’m the no 9 for a reason says the striker who scored 3 goals last season. Whilst Bowen did all the real strikers work. No Antonio you are not the no 9 for a reason, it is a total fraud. He’s so committed to the club who pay him millions a year that at 35 he still hasn’t given up travelling thousands of miles to play utterly pointless internationals and gives it the large one breaking confidentialities on his egocast. Can’t stand the bloke anymore and his overinflated sense of worth to this club. Good riddance to that ego can’t come too soon

I think mikey would be a perfect impact sub this season, he would scare the sh¡t out of defences in the last 20 mins of the game.

i wish you were around to say the same to Di Canio at the time. most professiobal footbalkers are w* with over-inflated egos. where you been?

Would love to see him add to his tally as our record goalscorer, he does need someone to push him on and be an effective replacement, Fullkrug is not that player. The price for Duran is a joke, Alberto looks the most promising; price age and experience.

Where does the quote in the headline “Duran must wait” come from? Antonio isn’t reported as saying it.

  • Ian says:

Not sure he’d be happy with you calling him Michael!
