West Ham’s left-back Emerson was never in serious danger of departing in the past two days, but the situation highlighted just how weak the left-back position is for the club.

Head coach Julen Lopetegui has emphasised the need for two players for every position, and while technically there are options, there’s a significant disparity between the first choice and the backup—particularly in Emerson’s case.

Simply put, Emerson has become a crucial player for West Ham, even without being at his tip-top best. His outstanding performances typically come when he plays alongside his former Lyon teammate, Lucas Paquetá. However, with the Brazilian now occupying a more central role than he did last season under former manager David Moyes, their opportunities to combine have decreased.

Despite this, Emerson remains vital for West Ham. Since Aaron Cresswell’s injury, Lopetegui’s preferred replacement has been Aaron Wan-Bissaka. While the new signing from Manchester United has impressed, this forces Vladimir Coufal to play at right-back, which is far from ideal.

West Ham and sporting director Tim Steidten did solid work in the recent transfer window, but the club’s goal of having two players of equal ability for every position remains unfinished. Galatasaray’s interest in Emerson may prompt the club to prioritise signing a new left-back in the upcoming transfer window.

Wan Bissaker was man of the match when he played at left back. We also have Ollie Scarles who I think could make the step up and has just agreed a new long term contract?
