Ex Barca Midfielder | Next Hammers Signing?

A lot has been happening at West Ham United in the last few days: Incoming players, the ‘Wan Bissaka Will – Wan Bissaka Won’t” saga has been rumbling on like some crazy London hokey-cokey song. Plus of course the distraction of actual football at London Stadium with the Betway Cup and some lovely cameos and a tantalising taste or two of the football style that may emerge under Lopetegui.

But the hints have been there from various in the know sources that West Ham aren’t finished in the market place. It seems likely the next arrival will be another midfielder – seemingly the whole of the ‘old guard’ are available if the price is right and I cannot believe J’Lo is planning to leave The Hammers short in midfield.

A couple of weeks ago Spanish sources including sites like Sport.es were full of stories about Midfielder Sergio Roberto running down his contract at Barcelona and planning to join the Premier League:  This has fallen off the radar in the last few days, and the Player has now left Barcelona pretty much unreported.

One Football even suggested that West Ham were strongest placed to sign the 32 year old who interestingly is available on a free transfer and plays central midfield, a defensive midfield role and has covered at right back.

With so many midfielders at London Stadium now ‘possibly surplus to requirements’ could it be that Steidten is lining up another master stroke free transfer under the radar to provide quality midfield cover for Alvarez and Rodriguez?

I’m pretty certain there’ll be a new midfielder incoming: A lot will depend upon the remaining budget as to whether a free transfer of another experienced player such as Roberto makes more sense than the reported interest in Carlos Soler from this weekend.

Like everyone else, lifelong WHU fan and season ticket holder in old BMU stand at Upton Park from 2003. Billy Bonds these days with my adult son and impatiently waiting for my Grandson to be old enough to initiate him before his mum grabs him for Man U. All opinions are my own very biased ones.

Coufal is 32 in 11 days.
Sergi is a very good player with years of experience at a top club.
Or do you think he got 14 years at Barca through luck.

Go for Matt O’Riley from Celtic instead – he scored 19 goals plus 18 assists last season and is only 23 years old. What a difference he would make to our midfield and already Brighton, Chelsea and Atlanta are interested in the Danish international. 4th bid of only £20 million from Atlanta just rejected. Go on Tim!

Do West Ham need another midfielder? Even if Julen plays five across the middle, we still have an abundance of them.

Alvarez, Rodriguez, Soucek, Guilherme, Ward-Prowse, Paqueta, Kudus, Irving, Earthy, Potts, Orford

…..then there are others sometimes described as forwards
    Bowen, Summerville, Cornet

A couple might leave, and the likes of Irving, Potts, Earthy and Orford could be loaned out, regardless our bench is going to look healthy.

Soucek and / or Ward Prowse will be sold, Academy players loaned out. leaves just Alvarez and Rodriguez- and Alvarez is injured.

  • Spindrift says:

Guess this may be an option if players midfielders sold. Can also play RB, which might be considered useful back up to AWB if Coufal goes.

Not worried about age. Plenty of top midfielders still played at the highest level well into their mid-30s.
