West Ham’s pre-season is a chance for the rested squad to assemble, regain fitness and start to prepare for the season to come after a decent break, for most players this year.
In addition, it is an opportunity for the manager and his coaching staff to assess those who are new (some chance!) or returning from loan, ahead of decisions about shaping the squad and ‘who’s staying, who’s leaving’ before the 1st September deadline.
Last season Lopetegui cut both youth and experienced players, sending Potts, Earthy, Aguerd, Cornet, Zouma and Ward-Prowse out on loan before the deadline day incomings. It seems Graham Potter has already made up his mind on one departure, from the discussions which are taking place between West Ham and the destination club.
Cornet’s West Ham wage is proving prohibitive
West Ham’s spokesman confirmed that the club are already in discussions over a further loan for Maxwel Cornet back to Italy: As before, Cornet’s salary of £55,000 a week – until 2027 – is proving the same stumbling block which meant in his loan to Genoa in January of this year, the Hammers were left subsidising most of his salary.
“We are talking with the Italians but sadly they only want to pay a very small percentage of his wages“.
Nothing changes then. Still two more years on Cornet’s West Ham contract and no takers in sight, it seems, on a permanent sale. Genoa (Assuming it is Genoa again – MT ) know a good deal when they see one and will be banking on the fact that Cornet has nowhere else to go.
If he does not care to be proactive in his own interests, let him sit at West Ham with no game time and go stale. In 2027 he will be hard pressed to get an offer from anywhere.
