Suffice to say, West Ham have been struggling to offload a large number of the first-team squad to fund sales during the summer transfer window.
Emerson, Edson Álvarez, Andy Irving, Guido Rodríguez and Maxwel Cornet are all very much on the ‘for sale list’, and there are a number of others for whom bids would be accepted.

However, there have only been two bids so far for any of the above. Claret & Hugh revealed the first one — £2.2m for Andy Irving — last week. But there has been a more recent offer, which was immediately rejected and described by a West Ham source as ‘derisory’, for Maxwel Cornet.
Considering other comments from senior Hammers sources have referred to talks with ‘the Italians’, it’s safe to assume this offer came from Genoa.
Cornet was on loan at the Serie A outfit last season and impressed before picking up an injury for Patrick Vieira’s team. Whether the latest offer for the Ivorian was a similar loan move is likely, because West Ham would jump at the chance to sell the player outright — even at a massive loss.

The Hammers board sanctioned the £17m switch from Burnley in the summer of 2022 and are fully aware they’re unlikely to see any of that fee back.
As things stand, there has been far less outbound transfer activity than expected, which probably explains why the recruitment team seem to be targeting one position at a time.

Really don’t mind that nobody’s bidding for Alvarez. Sure he gets the odd stupid yellow, but he’s a class player. Would take him over JWP in midfield any day, especially with Potts coming up the ranks.
A player doesn’t opt for a new squad number if he’s planning to leave.
