Claret & Hugh has learned the expected return date for Edson Álvarez this evening following discussions with a top West Ham source.
Whilst the news is far from ideal, the return of the Mexican midfielder is within sight after a hamstring tear that was more severe than initially reported.
Álvarez missed most of the Copa América due to a hamstring injury he sustained in the 30th minute of Mexico’s 1-0 win over Jamaica, and he hasn’t been seen since.
The former Ajax man was sorely missed in the heart of the Irons’ midfield during the season opener against Aston Villa, prompting Sean Whetstone to inquire about his return.
“We think it will be after the international break,” said the Irons source. “The tear turned out to be much worse than we thought.”
Whilst this news has both positive and negative aspects, it suggests that Álvarez could return for the Premier League fixture against Fulham on September 14th. Unfortunately, he will miss the EPL matches against Crystal Palace and Manchester City, as well as the League Cup clash against Bournemouth.
A tear is pretty significant. I just hope he isn’t rushed back and gets it properly fixed and healed.
One of those worrisome injuries that leave doubt in a players mind for a year or more .
We allowed Downes to go to Southampton when he could have been a natural replacement for the Mexican.
Whoever agreed to that is responsible for the mess we now find ourselves in.
get a grip mate 🙄 Downes is bang average. cannot do what Alvarez does, and without his sale one of our signings wouldn’t be here
Look back on your records . WHO was it who said ( when ALVAREZ got his hamstring injury , which usually is SERIOUS ) that it may be a blessing in disguise for W.H !! to prevent his transfer to M.U. what a stupid comment that has come to haunt you !
