Lukasz Fabianski joined numerous Irons legends when picking up the original Hammer of the Year trophy last week.
The official site reveals that the silverware – presented to Fab by Paul Christmas and Michael Searle of the Official West Ham United Supporters’ Club, has been held by such as Bobby Moore, Sir Trevor Brooking, Billy Bonds – plus fellow stoppers Phill Parkes and Ludek Miklosko.
Receiving the award, Fabianski said: “I’m very happy that the fans voted for me to be the Hammer of the Year last season – it’s really nice to be appreciated, especially being a new member of the club.
“It’s something special to play every week in front of 60,000 people who are behind you, supporting you from the very first minute until the last.
You try to do your best just to make them happy, and then you try to enjoy the game and the result as well.”
Fabulous keeper and, if he stays with us for a few more years, he’ll definitely deserve to be spoken about in the same breath as the legendary Phil Parkes and Ludek Miklosko. Let’s not forget Mervyn Day, too. Bet Arsenal wish Fab was still on their books …
