ONLY NOW that the transfer window has closed can some of the ‘near miss’ stories be unpacked as players, agents and clubs become less secretive about the ‘deals that never were’.

It seems that West Ham tried in vain to pull off another €20 million-plus signing – which would have been something of a coup –  in the last few days of the window as Nuno sought another attacking player to bolster his resources.

Seria A side Napoli’s insider AreaNapoli.it makes the claim on twitter this morning:

“@WestHam is the club that offered €20 million for Antonio Vergara in the final days of the transfer window, but @sscnapoli considers him unsellable.

Vergara is the 23 year old attacking Italian u20 International midfielder with Champions League experience for Napoli. Perhaps understandably, the Italian side decide he was ‘unsellable’ and rejected West Ham’s bold but unlikely bid for their hugely talented player who could have stepped up into Lucas Paquetá’s number ten shirt.

You may recall the Italian scored last week against Chelsea in the ECL: Perhaps understandable that €20 million wasn’t accepted nor, apparently, was the player interested in walking straight into a relegation scrap in East London.  Another case of ‘we tried’?

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

We tried fc, really nowhere near seriously hard enough which tells you all you need to know. Makes the already low life DS look even lower that he treats us with such utter contempt!

Del Boy Dave Sullivan should be hanging out at Petticoat Lane with the barrow boys.

  • Saul says:

I can understand doing this as a tactic, if that is Mr. Sullivan’s wont, once, maybe twice, before the fans realise it is indeed a tactic but doing so window after window after window screams of a lack of respect for the supporters. Or maybe he does actually think we’re all morons. I kind of get the impression he does

How much of this is for real?
All on last 2 days of transfer period.
Rafiu Durosinmi (striker) club wanted £12m whu bid £6m.
Antonio Vergara (midfielder) whu ham bid £17.5m. What was he worth £30m+. Considered unsellable.
Nathan Souza (c/bk) whu offered 3 bids up to £35m.
Do they think fans are stupid these are all false bids or know they are not acceptable.
What were they doing in other 28 days of transfer period.
When Emerson signed from Chelsea that was like a yo yo and finalised at eleventh hour.
Bunch of jokers and get what they deserve.

Same old story. Sullivan thinks the supporters are fools . He insults us window after window . He has ruined our club just as he did to Birmingham city . He has dragged the Hammers down into the gutter with him . Hopefully the club will survive longer than he does . So sad .. COYI⚒️

Not sure if this “story” is supposed to make anyone feel good , bad or indifferent, bit of a non starter really , sorry for the constructive criticism. 🙏🏻

  • Taffyhammer says:

Good to know he was on our radar. If we don’t at least try, we will never get. That will always be true.

I heard a rumour that we bid £25m to get Declan Rice back but Arsenal didn’t want to sell. Oh well, we tried 🤷‍♂️.

No decent player was going to join in January a club currently 6 points from Premier League safety. B&S can leak as many “we tried” stories as they like but I doubt there is now a single fan out there that will fall for it.

Having said that though, this transfer window wasn’t the problem. The damage had been done through a general incompetence and the lack of a coherent strategy over the past few years.
