Fairy tale ending for third keeper David

You only get the sort of fairy tales we saw yesterday in football.

No other game can truly complete when it comes to ironies and ‘miracles’ as we saw when the son of Irons legend Alvin was hugged by every other Hammer in sight as he shed tears at the end of a debut which left us all surely with lumps in our throats.

David Martin did not have loads to do but that he kept a clean sheet after 14 since Bournemouth was a ‘miracle’ at such a place as Stamford Bridge.

That it should have been achieved by son of one of our greatest heroes at the age of 33 after a career in the lower leagues was fantastic and he will now be heading for Wolves on Wednesday with something more than a spring in his step.

This is a No 3 keeper basically brought in for training ground duties demonstrating just what football can throw at you when you reckon you’ve seen it all.

Talking at  https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2019/november/30-november/david-martin-aaron-cresswell-we-couldnt-be-more-delighted he said: “[My debut] still doesn’t feel real yet, but obviously I’m pleased I got through it!. I did actually enjoy it in the end, which I didn’t think I would do.

“I’m 33 now so I’ve had a decent career and played quite a few games, but it still can’t prepare you for coming into this game. I’ve been struggling to eat for two days! Cress was laughing at me before for my plate getting taken away because I just couldn’t finish my food.

“For my Dad to see that here, for me to make my debut for a club he played for over 21 years and keep a clean sheet – and get a win for the boys more importantly as well – it’s just a fantastic feeling.

“I enjoyed it but now it’s about the lads, and being ready for Wednesday [night against Wolves].”

And Cresswell added: “I’m absolutely delighted for David. He’s got his chance and he’s taken it. I couldn’t be more proud of him.

“When he joined the club, David’ll tell you he wasn’t expecting to play being third-choice, but he’s come in every day and he’s been the most hard-working lad we’ve got. “
