Flynn Downes has left a heartfelt farewell message to West Ham fans following his £18M transfer to Southampton.
A lifelong Hammers supporter, Downes is clearly relishing the continuation of his adventure with the South Coast club. However, he took the time to say goodbye to West Ham via his social media page and even cheekily hinted at a Hammers return in his message.
“Well Irons, what can I say? I grew up as a boy dreaming of one day wearing that Claret and Blue shirt. I feel so privileged to have played for this fantastic football club, to have won a trophy, and to be a part of that European journey is truly an honour.
I want to thank the fans for always sticking by me and making me feel so welcome as one of their own from day one. Thank you to the staff and my teammates for inspiring me to get better every day; I made so many friends that will last a lifetime.
Any footballer wants to play week in, week out, and it is obvious I found regular minutes difficult to come by. That is football at the end of the day; I don’t harbour any bitterness, it was simply time for me to move on to another great club in Southampton, to continue my footballing journey.
Hammers, you are in good hands, and I wish you nothing but success this season. What a club! And what a special group of people as well!
Who knows whether our paths will cross again one day, but for now, thank you for everything.”
Best of luck Flynn.
I don’t think we’re given enough opportunities. I’d love to see you back in the claret and blue in the future. Good business by Southampton. Best of luck Flynn, except against us.
Flynn Downes has class. That was a very nice way to say goodbye to the Hammers and it’s fans. Best of luck to you with your new club, Flynn!
Stupid selling him imo ….but once again when we sell.a player look.how fast the deal was done …am I the only one seeing this……chasing players for last couple months…with no bids ….BUT downes gets sold and he is in his new soton shirt within a couple days ….
REALLY ..
.so plse tell me why when we try to buy players it’s bir like this ….when we sell they fly out the door …its completely ridiculous
We have the seventh highest revenue so we should be aiming at that level, we should be pushing the big six.
Last season we finished ninth, the season before fourteenth is punching below our weight.
Flynn Downes is a premiership player, too good for the championship he showed that last season. But is he good enough for a club pushing the big boys, not at present, maybe in time.
It was Southampton and Ipswich who were interested.
What a blinding lad. Good luck Flynn from the bottom of my heart. I’d love one day get the inside track on Moyes and the way he treated you. COYI
