Fernandes stats and Moyes words tell us to calm down

|

Let’s be honest!

Did any of us know anything much about Gedson Fernamdes until he started being talked up by Sky who have variously linked him with us on loan with an additional £33 m offer to buy.

They then claimed Chelsea were in with a similar loandeal but with £55 million attached before announcing earlier today we were set to get him on an 18 month loan with no fee offered to buy.

Weird? No not really. It’s the winter window and all sort of stuff gets peddled around and the only certain outcome is that the punters get their expectations and optimism higher and higher.

However, a look at the fella’s stats are instructive. Who is this 21 year old and what’s he all about?

The stats tell us he has played 29 games at Benfica between 2018- ’20, scored no goals and provided two assists. For reasons unknown there is apparently a £100 million release clause in his contract.

Meanwhile at the presser ahead of the Sheffield United game David Moyes merely said his name had been discussed adding: “He’s a young player with potential, probably more for the future.”

Let’ be clear, this is no ready made superstar ready to step into and revolutionise the Irons team yet the hype is extraordinary given the stats.

Perhaps everybody needs to calm down a tad !

If there is no option to buy then honestly, let him find his way to the first team in Benfica or elsewhere. We honestly don’t need someone blocking the likes of grady and holland and eventually end up at the ‘so called big clubs’.

I agree with the comment about Sander Berg. I think there are players better suited to our game and ‘hungry’ in our lower leagues. A box to box midfielder of the calibre we got with Cress and Antonio for a fraction of the price of a (potential) diva from abroad would be my preference.

Isn’t he supposed to be a DM? therefore, a lack of goals isn’t necessarily a sign of not being that good?

    • That’s his second position. My point is that he’s not really one for now according to Moyes and apparently we were looking for a box to boxer which is clearly what we need – this fella is a centra; midfielder of which we have a number. But as said he ain’t gonna revolutionise us until some way down the line MAYBE

Gotcha. As a youngster coming into the Prem we only have to look at Fornals to know he’s gonna need time to adapt and only a fool judges from a youtube compilation. I guess only time will tell. He does look good in the tackle though and rapid which is a good start for a box-to-box midfielder. Got some tricks too. Signs are definitely promising, guess we’ll just have to give him time and wait for a superstar to develop. Be nice if we can get Berge too though.

What I do not understand if he is one for the future why is he on an 18 month loandeal?

If the Red Bull model is really our aspiration, then most players coming in will be around this age, with maybe even less experience.

So I could argue that we best get used to being exited by this sort of player. Or not be excited at all.

I agree, January transfer window does me in. One day the manager hints at younger players, then we hear the more typical West Ham mid season 30+ big wages, like Fellaini.

  • Danielson79 says:

Would prefer Sander Berg myself. Looks more solid on the ball and more the kind of player we need.

  • Gavin&Stacey says:

So don’t get too p’eed off when we don’t sign him at all

Agree. Personally I would prefer to sign proven premier players (if available) in this window to strengthen where needed, and hopefully end up in a respectable league position and then look at DM’s vision for the future and move on from there. Given our rollercoaster past years, maybe now is the time for some patience and sensible business decisions from the powers to be for the good of the club.

That Italian journalist Nicolo someone, that broke the Haller news ahead of everyone else, has supposedly just said this is now a done deal, loan + £32m option…

  • Dusty Miller says:

CORRECT HUGH !! LET’S KEEP COOLSEE CALMSEE . THE LAST DAY OF THE TRANSFER WINDOW CAN’T WAIT FOR IT TO HAPPEN UP UNTIL THEN IT’S RUMOUR FEST🤔🤔🤔
