First shock of deadline day | Potter bolsters midfield

Compared with the August deadline day when player were jetting in and signing hours before the window closed, we thought this January window was going to be a pale imitation. However the surprises have started early at West Ham’s recruitment centre with the overnight news of a player heading to London Stadium in a much needed boost to West Ham’s ‘stodgy’ midfield.

Graham Potter has made the decision many – including Claret and Hugh – have been calling for: The performance of the midfield has been so bang average in the first half of the season that there are immediate, free upgrades that can be applied by bringing back on-loan players. Potter has indeed decided to activate the ‘recall’ option and is reported to be bringing £30 million man James Ward-Prowse back to West Ham.

As reported first in the Athletic overnight, West Ham’s management quite rightly see the option of upgrading Guido Rodriguez and Andy Irving as a no brainer: Presumably one or other of these two will now be allowed to leave on deadline day. Irving was the subject of a failed loan bid last week and Rodriguez has been reported as being desperate to leave.

Ward-Prowse whilst by no means perfect will add depth to West Ham’s squad and much needed goal threat from corners and set-pieces.

More Common sense from Graham Potter.

[Later edit] On closer inspection, all of our correspondence earlier in the window regarding JWP and a loan confirmed there was no ‘recall’ option. Indeed on checking with the club, it has been confirmed that this is a ‘termination by mutual consent’ rather than  strictly a ‘recall’ option, Same end result. MT

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970.. Don't take my comments too seriously, imagine we are having a chat at half time over a pint at L S and "let's disagree without falling out".

Never understood why JWP went out on loan in the first place!

  • Ian the sub says:

I very much welcome the return of J.W.P.
G.P. clearly knows what he is doing. He is obviously weighing up far more than what first meets the eye. I am very confident that J.W.P. Will be given greater creative opportunities , and he will grow accordingly .

  • Allan says:

Well I welcome him back! We never got to see the best of James Ward-Prowse because Moyes was always so defensive, but I reckon he can thrive under Potter.

  • Essexirons says:

😆😆 welcome to the party D

A certain board member plays a certain person on here like a puppet on a string.

    🤫it’s not Martin though🤫

  • D.f.butcher says:

If that’s an upgrade god help us?

  • Wayne says:

It’s interesting to also note that Forest have said they have terminated JWPs loan spell and he will be returning to West Ham.

  • Mr Buddy Lurve says:

When JWP arrived, he was always looking forward, receiving the ball on the half turn and looking to launch an attack.

Then Moyes told him to stop being so progressive and play the simple ball (backwards), sapping all of the life out of his game.

I, for one, am happy to see him return, but I hope it’s at the expense of Rodriguez and not Irving who needs a chance.

That said, in Potter I trust, so if he’s not seeing enough from Irving, then he shouldn’t be playing. At least, unlike J-Lo, Potter will be able to provide Irving (and all of the players) with clarity on what he needs from them.

What a load of rubbish. The reason JWP is coming back from loan is that Forest asked to terminate the loan deal, and we agreed. He wasn’t called back by GP as you so inaccurately put it.

    • Devon Iron says:

They can’t just ‘terminate’ the loan, as you say. It has to be agreed between the 2 clubs.

  • MJ says:

The best thing you can say about JWP coming back is that he isn’t any worse than the rest of our midfielders, unfortunately he isn’t much better either.

  • Mick Bering says:

In other words in plain english we are not going to spend a penny Mr Sullivan you are so ?

  • Jellied Eel says:

    Good decision.

  • Terry says:

Good business at least we didn’t have to break into that £57million we’ve now stashed away

  • Ammers 66 says:

Another J-Lo stupid decision and Potter showing clarity of thought. Everyone knows that JWP is better than Irvine (although liked, that’s not good enough) and Guido has been desperately found at in the Prem. anyone wants to argue, just look at JWP stats last year. Great management

  • D.f.butcher says:

Sorry not infused by ward prowse never have been like potter their reputations are bigger than reality?

    • B says:

      INFUSED

      Definition

      1. : to steep in liquid (as water) without boiling so as to extract the soluble constituents or principles.
      2. : to administer or inject by infusion especially intravenously. infuse the blood with glucose.

      I’m confused.

      • Mr Buddy Lurve says:

If you’re clever enough to post this, B, then you’re also clever enough to know that he meant “Enthused”.

Writing totally unnecessary comments like this, designed merely to make another human feel crap, is exactly what makes the Internet such a nasty place. Behave yourself and show some class.

        • L says:

And what did you just do then Mr Buddy? Oh yes write an unnecessary comment designed to make another human feel crap was it?

      • D.f.butcher says:

Also means fill or pervade, try looking it up?

  • J says:

Never understood Lopetegui getting rid of Ward Prowse and replacing him with Guido Rodriguez who is half the player. Good to see him back.

    • Wayne says:

Rodriguez looked, on paper at least, a decent back up.

Not sure any of us thought he would be playing week in and week out, no matter how out of his depth he seemed.

No idea if he was supposed to be a replacement for JWP though.

  • D says:

Wow talk about \underwhelmed. The big build up, drum roll …….. and you new midfield dynamo will be…………………. James Ward Prowse !!!
Then to add insult to injury we may be losing Andy Irving, who in my humble opinion has not been given a fair chance and is a decent player.
I can’t stand conspiracy theorists but I am beginning to think you are a mouth piece for the board………

  • J says:

Good…we missed his corner delivery’s. I was shocked he was sent out on loan

  • Mike J says:

Surprised he was allowed to leave in the first place considering his goal involvements last season. Great to have him back.

    • Paul Taylor says:

One of many nonsensical decisions by Lopetegui replacing him with Rodriguez, bizarre Ward-Prowse first season was excellent but he’s formed dipped as did a lot of player’s under Moyes tactical plan! I use the term lightly, park the bus on the 18 yard box and bore the fan’s and player’s to death, masterful! He’s a solid passer and technician with an eye to attack and a goal. Great to have him back, now get Aguerd back and get him playing as well, quality defender but undermined by Moyes.

      • Ammers 66 says:

Totally agree. We have a defence struggling and a player on loan that with some good man management and confidence being bolstered will do a job. Name me one player in the final 10 games last year who didn’t struggle
