“Forcing The Issue” | Wan Bissaka Now The Top Choice?

West Ham were believed to have whittled their right-back transfer shortlist down to only two names within the past week. As most will already know, the first of player was Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters, closely followed by Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The choice of which double-barrelled surnamed defender to go for was a closely guarded secret; however, the decision has probably been made a whole lot easier following Southampton’s recent transfer demand.

As you lovely readers may already be aware, the south coast club are insisting on a whopping £10 million as well as Flynn Downes to sanction the departure of Walker-Peters. Downes is valued at £15m, making the overall value of a KWP purchase £25m which is far more than the Irons had bargained for.

Nobody can blame the Saints for trying their luck, however the valuation does seem somewhat excessive and prices the player at twice the rumoured amount Wan-Bissaka would cost. All Southampton are doing is trying to haggle of course and there’s nothing wrong with that. But the art of negotiation is knowing when to walk away, and the Saints’ valuation has surely stopped this transfer decision from being a close call.

Put simply, West Ham could afford to buy Wan-Bissaka and still either retain the services of Flynn Downes or sell him to Southampton for £15m.

Purchasing the Man United full-back would also allow the Hammers to take their time making the decision on Downes, who is currently under the watchful eye of new head coach Julen Lopetegui.

It may yet be that Hammers fan Downes has some part to play at West Ham next season, which could mean that Southampton not only misses out on the sale of their full-back but on purchase of their favourite midfielder too.

Nice piece Gonzo. You always put together sound and interesting articles. Much of the stuff from others is sadly junk. When I see your name at the top I always clock in. COYI

I want us to keep Downes he will be a great squad player for us and easily fill in when Alvarez starts getting the card count up so tell the Saints no to there ridiculous valuation and let them deal with an unhappy player

  • Graham says:

Why not tell Southampton that if they want Downes then it’s £25m

  • Ian says:

I’m hoping Wan Bissaka is at the top of our list now. Better player, cheaper and enables us to keep Downes, who in a possession based team is going to be a valued squad player and homegrown.
Most of all though, selfishly, I really want us to sign Wan Bissaka

  • Alan says:

I think we’ll end up signing KWP. Swap deal with neither side paying extra on top. Downes is their top target and KWP is the right back Lopetegui has identified as his first choice in that position.

Soton will point out that other clubs want to sign KWP which is true, however, we can simply say that if they sell to anyone else you’ll not be getting Downes off us and it becomes a stalemate.

Downes doesn’t want to go anywhere else other than Soton and KWP is in the last year of his contract and not signing a new one. It’s beneficial to both sides to get this done.

I would keep downes true west ham lad and improving player he deserves a chance to prove himself in our midfield? Buy wan bissaka and sell ings to Southampton plus £15m for Walker-peters ? Then buy yousef fofana -nice and Jon Duran -Villa and reiss Nelson from arsenal for £75m combined. If we can sell aguerd and zouma buy todibo from nice for £35m .

  • Charlie Farley says:

Downes isn’t good enough for a top six challenging team. Can’t any of you see that?

  • Hugh Jassoll says:

sell downes to ipswich and buy bissaka tell southampton to xxxx off

  • Matt says:

Starting to think this is Tim using Wan-Bissaka interest to lower the KWP price? 🤔

Same thought has crossed my mind with Todibo CB at Nice. That way force price up for Juventus to buy Todibo and force them to sell us Soule 🤔

Will we be able to agree personal terms with AWB? The wages Man Utd were/are paying is next level. The last time we tried to sign Lingard we never quite got the deal across the line even though everything else seemed a good fit.
