Forgotten West Ham Target Suddenly Looks Like An Interesting Option

One-time West Ham target Romano Schmid featured for 45 minutes in Austria’s 1–0 win over Tunisia on Monday. The player was heavily linked with West Ham last summer before the club chose to secure Mateus Fernandes instead.

Romano Schmid Back On West Ham Radar?

With his contract at Werder Bremen expiring in June 2027, the 26-year-old attacking midfielder would be a player worth revisiting. However, he would need a lot of persuading to swap the Bundesliga for a Championship campaign, so this is probably a deal that is highly unlikely to happen.

Yet, if the rhetoric is to be believed — that West Ham are targeting an instant return to the Premier League — this is exactly the calibre of player they should be pursuing.

Championship Challenge Could Complicate Deal

On wages believed to be around £21,000 per week, Schmid would be well within West Ham’s financial reach.

However, at just 5ft 6in, there are also understandable questions about whether the club should be targeting more physical players, exactly the approach Sam Allardyce took the last time West Ham dropped into the Championship.

Leeds United came close to landing Schmid in January for a fee believed to be around €15m, but ultimately chose to bring in Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton instead.

With that deal not becoming permanent, Leeds could rival any potential West Ham interest in Schmid when the summer window opens.

Bundesliga Midfielder Attracting Growing Interest

According to recent reports, Lazio are also monitoring the Austrian, who will be involved in the forthcoming World Cup.

Schmid featured 34 times for Bremen last season, contributing four goals and eight assists.

He is represented by Gersh, the same agency that manages Jarrod Bowen, with Tyler Alexander-Arnold overseeing their UK operations.

Füllkrug Link Adds Interesting Twist

Werder Bremen are also among the clubs showing interest in Niclas Füllkrug, raising the possibility of a deal that could involve the former German international.

Whether such an arrangement can be agreed remains uncertain.

For now, West Ham’s hands are tied. No transfer activity can begin until the window officially opens on 15th June and, as previously confirmed, there will be no new arrivals until several departures from the current squad have been finalised.
