Former Hammer finally makes his mark in Germany

However, 2021 has been a breakthrough year for the 22-year-old who has been in the starting line-up in all five games.

Reece Oxford had already sniffed the Bundesliga air in Gladbach before his engagement in Augsburg. Now the German press is raving about his performances with German media outlet Kicker saying Oxford has made a significant contribution this year and is finally showing his value to the team.

Last year Oxford only made substitute appearances for the German team, if at all. The 22-year-old came from the bench five times, mostly as a reinforcement for the defensive midfield in the closing stages of games when they needed fresh legs. When Heiko Herrlich changed the formation to have three- or five-man defence for the first time in the 1-0 win in Bielefeld in mid-December Oxford showed he could do a very solid job as a right centre-back and has kept that role since the start of the new year.   “Since he was in the starting line-up, he has been playing one outstanding game after the other,” Heiko Herrlich praised Oxford

  1. I believe that there were too many factors involved in his failure to make it with us. Possibly with Moyes as manager, he would’ve been handled differently and come through at our club.
Hopefully, he does match his potential and isn’t lost to the game. Moving to Germany and being out of the limelight has probably brought maturity and focus to his game.

  2. Good Luck to him .. He got rave reviews v Arsenal as a 16 year old .. The result had something to do with that, but he looked composed on the ball that day, which was certainly amazing for a player that age, but off the ball he looked like a 16 year old thrown in .. His big chance was v Shrewsbury in the FA Cup and he blew it, big time .. He was no better than Martinez and Cullen that night and I was far more impressed with Reece Burke and where is Reece Burke now? .. His attitude that night looked in question to me and he was soon left behind by Declan Rice .. Maybe the club were culpable by paying him a reported massive wage for a youngster .. Maybe the penny has now dropped and he is making the most of his physical attributes and athleticism .. Maybe well done to Augsberg for persevering .. Interesting to see if he keeps it going ..
