Former Hammer suffers heart attack

|

francoisFormer Hammer François Swat Van der Elst was taken to hospital after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday, Belgian media reported on Tuesday. 62 year old Van der Elst is currently in intensive care and is kept in an artificial coma. His condition is critical and he is constantly monitored.

“Francois had an operation because he was suffering from heart rhythm disorders” his brother Leo Van der Elst told the press “After treatment, he felt well and returned home. For the New Year, we are going to drink a small glass of champagne at my mother’s. Back at home, Francois suffered a heart attack, in the presence of his wife. The emergency services were called, but it took them thirty minutes for him to be resuscitated. It’s way too much. The doctors are doing all kinds of tests to monitor the situation. There is no answer yet about his condition, but we are continually being kept up to date. “

The former Belgium international played for West Ham between 1981-1983, he made 61 appearances scoring 14 goals for the Hammers

Francois was one of my favourite West Ham players at the time. He was an excellent player who linked well with Trevor Brooking and was well ahead of the rest of the team when it came to reading the game. So much so, it was really frustrating when the likes of Geoff Pike and Dave Swindlehurst just couldn’t keep up with what Francois was doing.
I really hope he makes a fast and full recovery.
