Former Hammer wins TV award

Former Hammer Anton Ferdinand has been awarded a prize at this year’s Royal Television Society Programme virtual ceremony.

His BBC programme Anton Ferdinand: Football, Racism & Me addresses the racist abuse he faced by John Terry in October 2011 for the first time before widening the debate to explore the deeper issues of discrimination in the industry.

An emotional Anton took to Instagram on Tuesday to thank his supporters for the Documentary accolade.

Anton said “Thank you to everyone involved BBC, New Era inGenious, Wonder TV, my family and friends thank you and love you all to my Wife thank you for your support throughout to our two beautiful kids, daddy loves you & this is for you!! Last but not least mum ur legacy lives on #positivechange

The brother of Rio joined West Ham aged nine later signing a three-year contract in the summer of 2002.He was handed his first team debut, by the late manager Glenn Roeder, in August 2003 when he started the 2–1 victory at Preston North End on the 2003–04 season’s opening day and he went on to feature in 26 games that season.

The centre back played 138 times for West Ham scoring five goals before he left for Sunderland in 2008 for £9m later retiring from playing in 2019 after a season with St Mirren.
