West Ham United bolstered their defensive ranks with the deadline day signing of Brazilian centre-back Igor Julio, who arrived on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion. It would be fair to say the signing wasn’t greeted with universal acclaim as the Hammers finished the transfer window with a whimper.

Juilio completes West Ham’s Brazilian trio, linking up with Lucas Paqueta and Luis Guilherme.

In fairness I didn’t know much about the player, yet having spoken to some supporters of Brighton was pleased to receive some positive feedback about the player.

Igor signs for West Ham

Igor is West Ham’s latest addition

Looking at his career the  27-year-old brings a wealth of experience to East London, having racked up over 200 senior appearances across top leagues in England, Italy, and Austria. Known for his composure on the ball and aggressive defending off it, Igor is expected to add both quality and competition to Graham Potter’s squad.

Igor’s move came after a dramatic twist in the transfer window—he was on the verge of joining Crystal Palace before West Ham swooped in late to secure his signature. The Brazilian cited Potter’s Premier League pedigree and promise of playing time as key reasons for choosing the Hammers.

“I am really happy to be here at West Ham United,” Igor said. “It is a big Club, a historic Club, with fantastic support and a special identity. I am ready for the challenge and looking forward to giving everything I can to help the team and the Club”.

Having previously faced West Ham in the 2023 Europa Conference League Final while playing for Fiorentina, Igor now finds himself wearing the Claret and Blue, aiming to help the club climb the Premier League table after a less than impressive start to the campaign.

I have been a season ticket holder since the late eighties, so experienced the highs and lows of being a West Ham supporter. I previously wrote for OLAS and have contributed to a number of football publications in the past.
