You have to laugh or you’ll cry when it comes to West Ham and our luck with strikers—and once again, it’s proved to be the same old story.
Last season’s Hammers loanee Evan Ferguson made a stunning debut for Roma, scoring four goals in a 9–0 pre-season win. Sure, it was only a friendly, but the young Irish striker has got off to the kind of start at his new club that he could only have dreamed of at West Ham.
Ferguson has joined the Serie A giants from Brighton & Hove Albion on a season-long loan with an option to buy for €40 million.
The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at the London Stadium after being pursued by his former manager Graham Potter. But things didn’t go to plan. Ferguson arrived with a long-term injury and, unfortunately, never managed to get a consistent run of games to show what he could do.
In truth, we never got to see the best of him. In fact, we hardly saw him at all. But now, it seems Roma are ready to reap the rewards of Ferguson spending the past five months getting fit at Rush Green.
There is some sort of twisted fate going on here if Roma end up with a goalscoring Evan Ferguson whilst the Hammers get Callum Wilson instead.
Could only happen at West Ham United.
With a defensive attitude, any striker ( no matter how good they are) will struggle to score goals.
3 points for a win , was brought in for a reason. West Ham need to smell the coffee!!
They were playing against a Serie ‘D’ team of amateurs.
Not sure you can take too much from this game, they won 9-0 !!
Agreed that you can’t read too much into 4 goals against the local pub team but it could be just the confidence boosting trigger that Ferguson needed.
There was a player in there, with confidence that player may re-emerge.
Hope his ankle holds up and he does well. I’ll never know why he wasn’t even.given.a chance with us last year
One of lifes great mysteries I suppose
His goals were against a team just promoted to Serie D which is a semi-professional league.
Didn’t even know there was a Serie D until today.
Perspective?
I didn’t know there was a Serie D neither and I’m often in Italy.
If this pans out like this it’s really just bad luck for us isn’t it? If he’d shown anything when he was with us Potter would of played him surely.
It’s just West Ham; how often do we ever get it right? To think back of those great Upton Park days!
Haha! We were getting it wrong back then too!
