Frankfurt make Irons dig

Eintracht Frankfurt have levelled a dig at West Ham by labelling the Hammers “a club in the shadow of the London heavyweights enjoying a recent boom”.

The Irons are preparing for Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg against the Bundesliga side at the London Stadium.

Of course, to get here, the Hammers beat Lyon in the quarter-finals, thumping them 3-0 in France after a 1-1 draw in the capital.

The game against the German giants comes on Thursday and is perhaps the largest fixture in a generation for David Moyes’ side.

The London Evening Standard reports that Frankfurt’s preview of the game has aimed the dig towards the Irons and it could be one that comes back to bite them.

Lyon, of course, did similar before the quarter-final, with the Ligue 1 side making a claim that their progress was almost an inevitability.

And, per the newspaper report, Declan Rice admitted afterwards that such tweets had added extra motivation for the Irons to beat them in their own backyard.

He said: “Them things come back to bite you. We stayed quiet, put in a performance and now West Ham are in the semis. What more do we want?”
