Frankie Mac exclusive: “No changing my mind now”

McAvennie graphic
I said at the start of the season we could grab a Champions League spot and I see absolutely no reason to change my mind now.

But let me say at the outset – Slaven Bilic has been incredible… remarkable and I love love love what’s happening at my club.

Every expectation has been passed and now we wait for the final verdict – are we good enough for the Champions League? I really think we are.

However, as to the bigger question: Is this team better than the Boys of 86 …. Eff off LOL! Seriously, I’ll tell yer this – it would be one hell of a game.

Everything is possible as we reach the end of the season because of one thing – Sakho is back and make no mistake he IS the No1 striker.

No disrespect to Andy Carroll or Enner Valencia but they really don’t have the pace and movement of this guy. He’s brilliant and with him in the team we can go anywhere as favourites.

I know what it must be like playing in that team with Dimi Payet around because I had Alan Devonshire. Those sort of players make it easy for strikers. Payet, like Dev, is pure class and if I was part of this squad I’d be gagging to get out there.

The excitement in the air is incredible and that’s shown in us having sold 40,000 odd season tickets for the Olympic Stadium which is remarkable.

You can put that all down to the owners who have shown real vision and put their money where their mouths are.

There has never been a time like this in Hammers history and I personally thank everybody involved. It’s brilliant – absolutely brilliant!

Frankie will be bring his views on the FA Cup clash at Manchester United later this week.

  1. I agree with you Frankie…Slaven has been brilliant. A mark of the man is that he is a brilliant people person. I work in Canary Wharf and have seen him many times, shook hands and had a brief word too. But just before New Year, he was walking across Canada Square, he saw me and came across and spoke. We then sat outside Parlour Bar for 1 hour and 40 minutes enjoying coffee and talking all things football.
The point being I left buzzing after speaking to him so just imagine what he gives off to the players.
And I havn’t felt this excited for us since those brilliant days of 86 (man what days!!)
And listening to your recent podcast with GT was brilliant too.

  2. I totally agree with him, especially when he says “Sakho is back and make no mistake he IS the No 1 striker. No disrespect to Andy Carroll or Enner Valencia but they really don’t have the pace and movement of this guy”.
Yes, Diafra gives us another offensive dimension. Carroll is powerful, but he’s too slow, he doesn’t fit Slav’s system which focuses on speed and good feet.
    Personal opinion. 😉

  3. Was great to see Sak back on Saturday.I will take him every time over Carroll.Has been a brilliant season Frankie Boy,I agree.

  4. Love it when Sakho starts. His movement and running the channels is quality and he creates space for everyone around him, he holds up the ball pretty well too. He always impresses me when I see him play, even when he’s not scoring his work rate is a real asset. Then super sub Carroll can come off the bench to help him out if need be, after all he’s a big lad and he’s still getting up to speed.

  5. Well we’ve been doing alright without sakho most of this season but good to have him back. Great to have so many quality striker options after years of not. This current team is almost as good as boys of 86. Almost.

  6. Love em all lads !! All are needed in their own special way, 3rd goal down to carol at the scouse of blue !! Unplayable at times , injury obviously his nemesis , sakho top draw but as carol , hasn’t had a complete season, all special to me , all play a huge part when fit .
At the moment 86 nugging it , but still in the cup and title run in ? We will see! To beat 86 wehave to finish 3rd or better or 3rd and FA cup !! Big ask iIMO , but not for injury IMO we would be up top now , but we ain’t , one thing is for sure getting better and stronger all the time , can’t wait for next year , but not happy about leaving my beloved home from home.
Getting closer and closer , trying to think positively but it ain’t working ,lol ,54 years is a long time to uproot the only home I’ve never had to move from, until now, doesn’t feel good !. Us old un’s aren’t going to like it one bit , it just will not be home ?

  7. I dont like going OT but i see The Brentwood Gazette have pulled of another exclusive in the world of football. West Ham are willing to swap Antonio & cash for Cabaye…!! ???? Imho no chance at all.
This is the best squad since 86 it might even better that. Back then the game wasn’t awash with ££££ so the ‘smaller’ clubs could challenge for the title. People keep saying that this years PL is poor, i dont agree with this at all. The gap between the elite & the rest has been smashed. Money can buy you anybody in the world but that doesn’t mean that you can forge a TEAM. Leicester & us hammers have proved that this season, both our squads arent full of £20m+ superstars. The old guard is changing & we are in a fantastic position to gate crash the party.
