Fresh start at West Ham | Just the ticket for Chelsea reject

With The Hammers’ and Chelsea’s Mohammed Kudus negotiations ‘ongoing’ and Arsenal entering talks at the weekend albeit at lower figures than West Ham would be prepared to accept, the likelihood of a deal being struck increases. Amongst the options thrown into the mix were – apparently – upto eight names of Chelsea players as part payment – none of which were of interest.

West Ham did enquire about goal keeper Robert Sanchez. This makes sense as Areola is struggling to play to Potter’s style. We know discussions have been ongoing with Aaron Ramsdale as a second front line keeper.

News today that Chelsea are looking at another ‘keeper from Europe would back up the consideration being given to adding Sanchez as a makeweight in any Kudus deal.

Footballinsider247.com suggest that Chelsea are lining up Sanchez’ replacement:

“The Blues have now reportedly placed a bid worth €15million (£12.6m) for [ Mike Maignan], the 29 year-old’s signature and The Sun have since claimed that Maignan is set to become Maresca’s number one if he signs for the club.”

Which kind of leads Hammers fans into a keeper cul-de-sac with the unenviable choice of ‘the relegator’ Aaron Ramsdale or the accident prone Sanchez. It could be an excellent move for the Spaniard, however, and enable him to relaunch his career after struggling to impress at Stamford Bridge.

I suspect many fans are secretly hoping that the Hammers rekindle interest in SC Freiburg’s goalkeeper Noah Atobolu. But the Ramsdale or Sanchez deals are much more ‘West Ham’ in their potential to leave fans cold.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970.. Don't take my comments too seriously, imagine we are having a chat at half time over a pint at L S and "let's disagree without falling out".

Still got my gloves in the loft…I’d give it a go….

  • Taffyhammer says:

This narrative about playing style is completely and utter nonsense.

    Sorry, Martin.

  • Stephen Moore says:

    All pure and utter bollocks

  • Morty says:

If Areola has trouble playing out from the back, wait until you see Ramsdale. That’s why Arsenal replaced him

  • Q says:

Go for Ramsdale but we should also Persue the 20 year old keeper Gabriel Slonina 20 years old Chelsea keeper who has been playing for Barnsley in the championship. Very promising young goalkeeper. Make him part of the kudusq deal.

  • Mick bering says:

Theres an excellent keeper at Leicester city MADS HERMARSEN Worth a look Down the line they know a thing or two about keepers Gordon Banks Peter Shilton Kasper Schmeichel Say no more

  • Kenny Irons says:

All this cobblers about playing out from the back.
About time a goalkeeper was signed to do what he is supposed to do, stop shots and command the box.
Not play a six yard pass to a man with a player up his arse and give a goal away.
I don’t suppose there are any other goalkeepers in the world ???

    • John Sharp says:

Exactly. A goalkeeper that can catch a ball would be a bonus, behind a centre half who can head a ball.

    • Richard says:

Never used to do it until Guardiola started it at Man City. Now all teams have copied it.The only thing is we aren’t good enough to implement it.
Just give it a good pump up field ffs

  • Richard says:

If it were to be a choice i would take Ramsdale anyday.
As other have said Sanchez has this roberto about him and we know how well that went.
On another note i wish you and Gonzo would stop using words like “the relegator” and “wonderkid” in your articles. It just smacks of cheap journalism.

    • John Sharp says:

Agree fully. No goalkeeper has ever relegated a team single handed. West Ham went down a few times with some of our greatest players.

      • Bennyboy baker says:

Ramsdale is who we should be trying to sign yes he’s been relegated but he had no defence in front of him and the scores in the games lost which was most of them would have been more severe had it not been for ramsdale we need to get him before another club beats us to his signature

  • B says:

Despite Tom’s obvious bitterness and pointless rhetoric below, I don’t imagine this is a ‘joke’.
Ramsdale is far from my 1st choice, but there’s case if you are going to use a keeper as an extra defender, playing out from the back, although I’m not a fan.
Sanchez makes more sense, with the Potter-Sanchez history.

    • Paul Taylor says:

I think it comes down too value for money Ramsdale is a good keeper no question and if our budget is so tight £25m is better spent on a outfield CF or CM player! I’ve no faith in Fullgrub, Antonio is best suited to EFL so that’s the priority position. Kepa and Sanchez are error prone but I’d accept either if the additional capital is spent on acquiring a decent, young, promising CF that can hold the position and score 20 goals a season it’s long overdue and just embarrassing.

  • pat says:

The new Roberto if he signs….Truly clueless and amateurish in our dealings in the market place…..Kepa was available for £5million but i guess that means spending money so no thanks lets just have another of Potters pals from his days at Brighton.

Disaster written all over it if this deal happens.

  • Tom says:

This has got to be a joke post. Sanchez really. Just when you think this club couldn’t be more of laughing stock you get a joke post like this. How much more of Sullivan and Brady’s mismanagement of this club are the fan base going to put up with. Brady and Sullivan are running this club into the ground. Not run like a circus any more hasn’t aged well.
