Frightening relegation decision

By Gonzo

As the saying goes,’the devil is in the detail’. Or in the case of Hugh’s ‘relegation exclusive’ yesterday  . . . the detail is in the small print.

The C&H exclusive blog quoted a top source at the club, and was shedding light on the contractual situation of Hammers players who’s deals are expiring this season. However, hidden in plain sight amongst the contract news was a sentence that I found truly terrifying.

‘A key source has made it clear to CandH on three occasions there will be no change of management now or indeed should we drop’.

How can this be? I must admit that I had to read it three times to fully digest what was being implied. To paraphrase, David Moyes will remain as West Ham manager even if West Ham are relegated!

The obvious question is why? Why on earth would the club stubbornly stick with a manager who’s spent £200m and got relegated? Why would anyone paint themselves into a corner by declaring and implementing policy that would clearly hinder the football club?

Whilst I personally would have replaced David Moyes in November when the position of West Ham manager was still an attractive one, I can understand why the club would retain him if we survived the drop. But I honestly can’t fathom why we’d keep him in the event of relegation.

Moyes is completely unqualified to manage a team to promotion from the Championship. Unlike Sam Allardyce, Moyes has never won promotion to the Premier League so I’m baffled why the club would think that he’s able to do the job. There is zero evidence.

I’m dumbfounded why the club would not hire a specialist or recruit an up and coming talent from the continent. If they were so set on recruiting a coach with Championship promotion experience then so be it but Moyes is not that man.

There’s a league table whereby one can view the managers with the best EFL credentials and Moyes does not feature on it for a very good reason . . . . he hasn’t done it, EVER!

Neil Warnock has plenty or promotions (no I’m not advocating him), Tony Mowbray is pretty good too and even Harry Redknapp & Chris Hughton appear on the list.

Moyes doesn’t have a Premier League promotion on his CV. He does have a relegation though and if he takes West Ham down he’ll double that. To guarantee him the job irrespective of performance is ridiculously foolish.
