Genuine depth at the Irons

The news of Angelo Ogbonna’s injury could well have been a major blow for the Hammers.

This is a starting central defender who was tasked with keeping Liverpool quiet just 48 hours ago.

He went toe-to-toe with Mohamed Salah and was excellent, although the Egyptian’s remarkable speed on the ball was actually what led to the injury.

Still, Ogbonna could be out for the rest of the season, which in a few recent seasons might have genuinely led to panic stations at the London Stadium.

Now, though? Not so much.

We’ve reported already that there are no extra plans afoot in January to buy a new centre-back, or even loan one in.

We have three genuinely exceptional central defenders already and it will likely come down to a straight fight between Craig Dawson and Issa Diop to partner Kurt Zouma in David Moyes’ backline.

That’s a genuinely fantastic dilemma for Moyes to have. Dawson has been exceptional since his move from Watford and Diop is more than competent in defence too.

There’s no need for us to worry; the squad depth we have will more than see us through. And that’s not a prediction, it’s a fact.

One comment on “Genuine depth at the Irons

  1. Much as I love the Dawson no nonsense approach and he is a wonderful sub, I really want to see young Diop play with fellow Frenchman Zouma and stride forward. As with our Czechs, our French contingent should be comfortable together, including the Keeper.
