Seventy-nine-year old David Gold is set to make the briefest playing appearance of all time and hopes the ball comes nowhere near him.

A West Ham All Stars team is being put together to play West Ham Ladies at the Boleyn  in early summer to which we understand the likes of Russell Brand and James Corden have been invited.

And Gold – who played for the club as a junior – revealed to us this morning that he could make a fleeting appearance.

He explained: “I’ve been asked and we will see. But should I do so, which is probably likely, I’ll pull on the strip, go out there for no more than two minutes, hope and pray the ball comes nowhere near me before leaving to rapturous applause.

“It’s all for charity and should be fun for everybody involved but my own participation won’t be for very long should I decide to take up the challenge.”
