The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) has secured £4.7m from the Mayor’s Green Finance Fund to pay for the London Stadium’s solar membrane project which is to sit on the roof of the London Stadium.

This is an effort to slash energy bills at the arena that hosted athletic events during the 2012 Olympics.
A lightweight membrane measuring up to 7,000 square metres will be placed over the stadium roof to generate more than 1 million kWh of renewable energy per year and cut bills by a potential £350,000 per year, according to Mace.
The primary business case was predicated on carbon emission reduction, although financial savings were an important secondary factor. The project had the potential to generate approximately 10 per cent of the Stadium’s energy from on-site resources.
Davendra Dabasia, chief operating officer at Mace Consult, claimed the commission is especially pleasing because we’ve been able to leverage our responsible business consultancy services to help the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) achieve its sustainability goals.
He said: At Mace, we recently set an ambitious target of helping our clients to save 10 million tonnes of carbon as part of our responsible business plan, and this exciting project is another step in the right direction. It’s an example of consultancy work making a difference early on in a project’s lifecycle, influencing outcomes for the better.”
LLDC head of sustainability Ben Coulter said: “This a vitally important contract so it’s important to have the right support in place from the outset. Not only will this investment drive financial savings, it will also help make significant reductions to carbon dioxide emissions.”
