Gold: “This is my strongest squad in 20 years”

Gold2David Gold cannot remember in the 20 years he has been involved in the game ever seeing a squad of the quality currently in place at Upton Park.

And he has made it clear in an an exclusive ClaretandHugh interview that absolutely nobody will now be picked on anything other than form and ability.

He points to Matt Jarvis as an example of the current situation declaring: “He understands the position and will be entirely philosophical about it. He knows what he has to do because here’s a £10 million fully fit signing who can’t get on the bench.

“He will be moving heaven and earth to make it back into the squad and it is a perfect example of where we are at right now.

“We are similar to all the top teams. Everybody is having to really fight for their places. This is the most powerful squad I’ve been involved with in my time in the game.”

The Jarvis example puts to bed once and for all any talk that he will be on his way this January unless of course some club wants to come along and give us something close to what we paid for him. Even then  it may not happen!

The interesting thought which emerges from all of this: Perhaps we needed to live through the horrors of last season to arrive at where we are today!

After all wasn’t it the departed Mo Diame who claimed players weren’t putting it in on the training pitch last season because they were sure of the shirt at the weekend.

All of this, however, presents a new set of challenges to a manager who has many fans and a hard core bunch of detractors.

Gold said: “You’re right about new challenges. Players have to be kept motivated when they are not in the picture currently but will be constantly reminded of how quickly things can change with suspensions and injuries.

“They all have to step up to the plate and that as a club will make us stronger and stronger. Our expectations are being exceeded. Allowing Diego Poyet out on loan is another example of where we are at because he is a very fine young player..

“Diafra Sakho has been outstanding, Enner Valencia too, and now Andy Carroll is back. We look strong everywhere and we are playing the sort of game we’ve all been crying out for.

“I’m enjoying it, the players are enjoying it but most of all the fans – who will always be the Number One priority – are enjoying it. We all deserve this.
