David Gold – like everybody else who calls themselves a Hammer – is a vastly relieved man this morning (Thurs) after the victory over Burnley last night.
But he’s not kidding himself that this was anything other than a pretty ordinary performance by the team at the London Stadium
But apart from the single – and very scrappy one goal victory courtesy of skipper Mark Noble over Sean Dyche’s side – there were other things for which to be grateful.
And tweeting earlier this morning the co-chairman made it clear that results elsewhere went very much in the Irons favour.
He said: “What a fantastic night for results. It wasn’t a convincing victory over Burnley but it was a welcome 3 points. Well done lads. dg”
I must have been at the wrong game last night because all I saw were two very poor, tired looking teams both of which seemingly having no game plan whatsoever and showing rare moments of intent to win the game. Payet looked dead on his feet at half time and could only put a pass together three or four times throughout the game Noble likewise. Carroll was left with his arse in the wind with no one to receive his knock ons or pass to when he was holding up play. The whole thing was dreadful to watch and if Noble hadn’t managed that lucky rebound from what was a horrendous penalty the comments on this and other sites would be very different.
Imho Payet and Noble should be rested against Hull on Saturday put some fresh legs on the pitch, not because I’m confident we’ll get a win because I’m not, but we’ve got more chance of 3 points against them than Swansea and Leicester away.
Anyway I suppose a win is a win and for that we should be grateful. COYI ⚒⚒
The biggest criticism I have is,at times in the second half hanging on to a goal lead,we looked like an Allardicio team again.
When we play against better opposition, this sort of performance will not suffice. If we keep inviting teams on,we will come unstuck, i.e. Spuds.
What’s happened to the counter attacking team of last year, when attack was the best form of defence.
Still three points, some good individual performances especially Randolph, kept us in it with a world class save and good handling. COYI
I thought last night wasn’t bad. Burnley made it very difficult for us and we’re well organised and they aren’t a bad team. They rarely get turned over. The frustrating thing is that we don’t play with any intensity. Randolph’s distribution last night was poor and when the ball goes out of play for a throw we lose momentum because it takes so long to get the ball back and the opposition have time to get men behind the ball again. We need more ball boys at the side, each with a ball to give back to the player (not the away players obviously).
I say this tongue in cheek but not only are we blaming the stadium for our poor form we are now also blaming the ball boys!
Hi Cas, funny you should say that about the ball boys, I suggested exactly the same thing to a guy I was sitting next to. I actually suggested bearing in mind all these Russian athletes that are out of work due to their state sponsored activities we could hire the faster ones to retrieve the balls 😉 In honest on that point I am not sure why the advertising hoardings are set so far back and not in the shape of the pitch, the curve on them means the ball doesn’t bounce off them predictably, just make the barriers square like the pitch and won’t have to run so far 😉 I was up in the gods last night row 70 I also had another suggestion that maybe they can put an escalator in instead of those stairs I needed oxygen by the time I got up them 🙂
