Gold’s summer window view

DG is happy with this summer’s spending

David Gold believes the Irons have had a fine transfer window but suggests comparisons to last summer are not the best way of judging things!

The Hammers may have had their best ‘market’ ever in 2015 ahead of one of the most memorable seasons, with no player proving a failure.

And Gold admits that was probably the best ‘window’ in which he’s been involved since becoming involved in the game as an owner.

Speaking exclusively to ClaretandHugh he said: “I have to be happy with the business we have done this summer but the edge was taken off it by the injury to Ayew who had just became our record signing.”

“Then with the other injuries it threw a bit of a shadow over everything whereas last season we bought so well and got away to a really great start.”

“I think if you look and make the comparison you will find we are probably in the top ten clubs as far as spending is concerned and I think the buying we have done has been sensible and logical.”

And he admitted he was pleased that Pedro Obiang remained on the staff despite much rumour mongering that he was on his way to Italy.

He said: “I have a lot of time for him as a player and believe him to be a very valuable member of the squad.”

Pleased Gold likes Obiang; must be nice to get support from an owner. Always playing 2nd fiddle must affect one’s confidence. I’m sure DG’s serious support for Ant during the RB debacle must have helped Ant feel wanted, and help accelerate Slav into accepting Ant as a winger rather than RB…
I think Obiang is a great all round pro. Nearly always does a v reliable job as a stand in, although not quite as good this year as last….yet. Also seems to have a great attitude.
I wouldn’t blame him for seeking pastures new, because I think he deserves 1st team football, but I’m glad he’s still with us. I currently prefer him to Nordveidt, but think it is still v early days to be judging any of the misfiring newbies (e.g.Tore + Callieri too).
As Gold says, last summer every signing was a good’n which is practically unheard of. There are always the odd duff one. I think DS has made the best of a situation where he couldn’t get the top players to come. Personally I would have preferred Remy to Ayew or Zaza, but maybe the situations are different. But glad we dodged Benteke; I think he’s a donkey…
I’m far more excited by the potential of the youngsters (esp Fletch + Martinez) than Ayew or Zaza, but hope to be proved wrong. The young talent coming through is breathtaking… in defence and attack…The coming years looking v exciting, let alone this year when we have Payet and Carroll back….(Yes…I’m a Carroll fan)…until he gets injured again?
Winning ways are just round the corner now…

I bet nobody else refers to him as ‘Ant’ – I don’t think I’m all that keen on that and wouldn’t encourage it’s further use!

As for Obiang, I’m afraid I’d class him as lightweight – essentially a Sub, virtually never a Starter!
