Gomes makes his choice

West Ham look to have lost out in the race for Andre Gomes having learned that the Barcelona midfielder is keener on Everton than us.

It’s  a cruel blow to the Irons where Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos have been trying to persuade him and his advisers that the London Stadium is his best destination.

But it seems that Gomes wants Goodison Park and the Irons will now look at other alternatives they have in place stressing they don’t want to sign players who aren’t over keen on joining the the club.

Despite that, the Hammers haven’t entirely given up on the deal but believe they have only a remote chance of seeing the player change his mind after spending last season with The Toffees and aren’t keen on pursuing players who aren’t 100 per cent ready to join us.

Earlier today we revealed West Ham increased their bid from £18m to £20m to Barcelona but have been told that the 25-year-old has his heart set on a return to Goodison Park.

Everton’s interest had been reported as cooling by veteran journalist The Sun’s Alan Nixon earlier today but we had also revealed that  the Hammers had been unmoved by the story and that at this stage of the season it was very much a case of “cat and mouse .”

A senior club source speaking to Claret and Hugh via email this evening said: “We believe Gomes has chosen Everton ahead of us, so whatever we bid is probably irrelevant. We do not want players who do not want to come to us, we have alternatives”

  1. Fair enough. It’s no great surprise given that he was there last season and has probably made connections at the club and in the area. They also finished higher than us, and I suspect he feels they’re in a better position to break into the top 6 ahead of us.

I’m particularly happy with the stance of Pellegrini and Husillos that we don’t want players who are not excited about playing for us. Don’t want Everton’s (or anyone’s) sloppy seconds.

Let’s hope we finish higher than Everton next season and prove him wrong.

  2. To be fair to Gomes, after his time at Barca where he suffered from clinical depression and the stress that he felt he was under, the warm welcome he received at Everton rekindled his love for football. He is on record as saying that he “felt the love” from the terraces and that is what has no doubt made his mind up.

  3. Hi Hammers supporters. Evertonian here and I have to say you shouldn’t take it as a slur against your great club that Andre wants to come to us, if that’s true. Ray Roche sums it up perfectly.
Good luck next season to another “proper” football club.

  4. Another blue here – refreshing to see understanding instead of nastiness. It looked like Gomes threw himself into all things Everton even before he played – which is why there was such a quick bond both ways. Good luck next season

Can someone tell me if Tim Howard is still breathing ???
