West Ham United boss Graham Potter may have an ultimate vision for how he wants his team to play, but yesterday provided him with a much-needed short-term solution.

A 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth might not be the most headline-grabbing result, but it felt like a step forward. Potter may feel differently, given that his side conceded two goals — something he’s been desperate to avoid — but the difference in West Ham’s attack was stark.

The manager may eventually want to play with three central defenders, but the 4-2-3-1 formation used against the Cherries far better suited the players currently at his disposal. Granted, Lucas Paquetá and Jarrod Bowen began the game out of position in Potter’s preferred setup, but by the time his second-half reshuffle was completed on 53 minutes, everyone was back where they should be.

In Niclas Füllkrug, West Ham finally had a striker capable of holding the ball up, troubling central defenders, and bringing others into play. Bowen was transformed by the simple act of playing in his favoured position, with the protection of a full-back behind him.

Lucas Paquetá — who had been trying to create all game — was finally deployed behind the striker, where his tricks, flicks, and chipped through balls caused havoc.

In short, for much of the second half, West Ham looked as potent and attacking as they have since Potter’s first match in charge against Aston Villa.

The Hammers gaffer may still take his time identifying summer signings to implement his long-term tactical vision. But for now, he may decide that a pragmatic approach — using his predecessor’s old formation — is the best way to see out the season.

Not playing Mavro will help defence.
Trying Guilherme at mid attack (his preferred position) could also add some speedy.

Gonzo I agree but the 2 goals we let in should have been avoided the first areola should have done better the 2nd was not a free kick but we should have still defended it properly. So I think his defense was ok other than those 2 mistakes.the players were at fault for those 2 goals not his tactics in defending so should be able to play the way we did 2nd half all the time he just as to tell his players to stop making stupid mistakes.
